I got a hand-addressed envelope from a local address today. I did not recognize the name, but I recognized the part of town it was sent from.

It was a hand-written letter from a woman I'd never met, who saw that I'd given birth in the vital statistics section of the newspaper. She was writing to congratulate me, and to let me know that she would be happy to welcome me into her church, so that my baby could have God in his life. She casually mentioned that he needed extra blessings, as he was born out of wedlock.

The odd thing is that our local birth announcements only state that a boy was born to (my name) at Hamot Hospital on January 17, 2008. She must have used that info to obtain my home address, which is not hard, since I'm listed in the phone book.

All in all, it was a very kind gesture on her part. I can't help but feel a bit weirded about it, however. I guess times have changed, and we can't trust anyone anymore, especially when it comes to our childrens' safety.

How would you feel about this?
send her some bloody chicken bones %26amp; tell her she is welcome to join you in celebrating your own faith. I mean WTF you want me to take care of this for you?

Reply:That is kind of weird, and why my local hospital and newspaper have worked together to stop publishing births. It's too risky. You know, despite that weird fact, I think I would be more creeped out by the fact that it seems that she wasn't really writing to congratulate you, but to tell you that your baby is going to burn in hell if you don't take him to her church. That would concern me.
Reply:Honestly myself, I would be p*ssed because I am not religious, and do not like to be bothered by people who think that is wrong.

I never mention religion or the fact that I'm not religious to people who are, so I expect the same from them.

If you are religious, and are interested, that's great that you have someone who is so willing to support you... but the fact that she assumed, and also wrote he needs "Extra blessings" because you guys aren't married.... well that is rude.
Reply:It is not her business whether he was born in or out of wedlock. He has enough blessings having such a caring momma as yourself. Keep the envelope and her name in case you ever hear from her again. You cant be too cautious when it comes to your children. Warn your single mother friends. Maybe write a letter to the editor, call your local paper or the police.

That couple from Midnight Mississippi came to bring the word of God into 'The Walmart baby's' life because she was an abomination. When they were denied into the house, they later came back and stole the baby to baptise her. LOL. I love that movie..Be careful, theres some crazy people out there.

I wouldn't be wierded out or offeded by the religious aspect of it... maybe because I am pretty religious myself, maybe not... but I would we wierded out and sort of worried about the safety issue... sort of like this lady stalked me and my baby - regardless of the reason.

I would personally call the local police department... and tell them about it... maybe bring them a copy of the letter and address. Just to sort of let them know... God forbid... if anything should happen. If not for yourself and your children, then for someone else's.

This is most likely totally harmless, just a religious die hard on a mission to save all the "illegitimate babies" from who knows what... but what if it isnt?
Reply:although she may have meant well, it is completely uncalled for to do what she did. and not to mention disrespect to you and your baby. people should not try and push religion on other people, though it happens. i would definately feel violated and angry. she now knows where you live and i have heard some cases where they actually show up to your door with bibles. i would call the church and tell them that you dont appreciate being violated.

How to find out if you are adopted - when no one will tell.?

My husband was supposedly born in Texas at the same hospital as his siblings. We did a serch of county records and there is no record of him. All 3 of his siblings were listed, but not him. His family will not talk to us now because he has questioned things. We have no way of knowing his real name, birthdate, birth city or state. His mother kept us away from his Grandpa (the only one who would've talked) who lived with her then claimed he died 300 miles away, but said she didn't have a funeral for him. She flipped out when we asked for his Birth certificate so he could get a passport (she never gave it to him). We ordered one from the state and they sent a "Certification of Vital Statistics". She wouldn't give him his SS card when we needed it for a home loan, then she gave him one that looked nothing like mine (same age, same state). So we do have pleanty of reason to doubt, we just have no clue where to begin.

How to find out if you are adopted - when no one will tell.?
Look at the Date it was filed with vital statistics. If there is a period of time between the birthdate and the filing date, it is more than likely an amended certificate.

Make sure you ask for a 'full long-form birth certificate' they contain more details than the short form.

I'm so sorry if your hubby has been deceived in this way, there is no excuse for secrets and lies. None.

There are other things he can do to discover the truth. You may find the information on this site helpful. Apply for Non-Identifying information and join the registries, this will give you an answer either way; and I would suggest finding his birth on the Texas birth index too

I have an "amended" birth certificate that lists my adoptive parents as if they were my biological progenitors. And it was registered with the county clerk almost a year after my birth when my adoption became finalized. Most people don't notice that my birth certificate is weird. But if you look closely and you know what to look for the hints are there.

Y'know...maybe it is just time to sit down with his mom and ask for the truth. If it were me, I'd tell her this is her ONE and ONLY chance to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I'd advise her that if you find out anything contradictory or very different in the future you will then know that she willingly lied to you during the talk. I think an important question to ask her is WHY she is being so secretive...
Reply:Definitely have him request his long form birth certificate from the state. Original birth certificates are signed by the doctor/midwife who was present at the birth. Amended birth certificates are signed by the clerk and sometimes by the adoptive parents. Another option is to contact the Surrogates or Family Court in the county his adoptive parents resided when he was born/adopted. Unfortunately, some courts won't release any information without the adoptive parents permission - no matter what the age of the adoptee. Try to get a Certificate of Adoption. It won't have his original name or his birth parents' names, but it will be incontrovertable proof that he was adopted.
Reply:What on earth is a Certification of Vital Statistics? You asked for a Birth Cerificate. I would go back and say this isn't what I asked for, can I have my Birth Certificate? If they can't give you one, then ask why? If you get nowhere, then it definitely looks fishy. Everyone has a birth certificate, even if it is not the original.

Aside from expensive investigators, the only people who will know are those directly involved. It sounds as if they are hiding something. If things are so bad that his family are not talking to him then he has nothing to lose. Try to arrange a meeting with is mother, say you don't want to argue, but need to sit down and resolve things. Explain that you have no desire to cut anyone out and his mother is his mother, BUT, she is doing nothing to make him feel secure, and he believes he may be adopted. If she can be made to see that she has more chance of losing him as a son by keeping him in the dark, than by telling him the truth and letting him find his heritage, she may just open up.

Otherwise, what about old neighbours or family friends from when they were children - someone must know!
Reply:The certificate of birth and the certificate from vital statistics are the same thing. Whether you are adopted or not, when you order a new copy of your birth certificate it will look different from year to year as the office changes forms but there will not be a difference between an adopted child's and a biological child's birth certificate.

just say that he is adopted and register, that way if he is and his parents or birth family is searching for him the #'s will match up (ie: DOB) and the computer will make the connection.

The other thing is that SS cards for adopted people are the same as everyone else. Have him order a new one from the SS office (they are free) and you get one at the same time, you will see that there is no difference between the two.

Where I live, in Oregon, we have laws that allow adopted people to open their sealed records, see if there is anyone working in your state to make it happen, and if so tell as many people as you can so that the laws get passed. Here, we file the paperwork, pay the fee, see the counselor, then we can see our whole "pre-adoption

Passport on hold?

My wife and I applied for our passports on Nov. 26th for a trip to Mexico that departs on Feb. 5, 2008, I know I had plenty of time to get it so I didnt expedite. My wife received hers on Dec. 22, I received a letter telling me my birth certificate is a short form not a long form (WTF?????) Even though my BC was from vital statistics from Texas and I've used it to get into Mexico before. So I order my Long form Express but I am running out of time, I called the Passport Center and they told me I have to send it to them, I cannot go to a local agency and get one expedited because when they run my name it will come up "on hold" and they will not issue one. Am I screwed? This is sad. I still have to send it to South Carolina, they told by this week if I wanted to make it. Texas takes 10-15 bus. days, I ordered on Dec. 24th and paid for express mail.

Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks

You are in sort of a helpless position...not much you can do. when you get the birth certificate, mail it in to passport office express mail. You could try calling the birth certificate office and asking if they could do it IMMEDIATELY PLEEZZE...beg! can you reschedule your trip for a couple of weeks later? Did you ask the passport office if they can CANCEL the application they have so you could submit a new expedited one? You have probably already thought of these things, but figured I'd try. Hope it works out for you. also, I presume you are planning to FLY to Mexico. Passports are not needed for LAND and SEA travel to Mexico until after summer 2008...that requirement was pushed back and the exact date is not yet set.

It raises all kinds of questions, I think.

Primarily, in my mind, is: "Why did it switch?" If the practice began in order to protect adoptees from the indignity of illegitimacy (an indignity that seems alive and well, if recent discussions here are any indication, since so many people seemed at pains to deny that adoptees are illegitimate - which makes me think they believe being illegitimate is a bad thing to be), why has it become about protecting first parents from adoptees?

Apparently, being a child born to a single mother is no longer an issue. Now, the indignity is in giving birth to a child if one is a single woman.

This quote is simply one more piece of evidence that sealed records isn't really about protecting privacy of first parents. But it does beg the question: Why do so many adoption agencies work so hard to keep these records sealed?
Reply:I think the idea of sealed records in the 1930's was indeed to protect the adoptee. Being illegitimate in those days was a scandal and often resulted in discrimination against the illegitimate child--even into adulthood.

BUT TIMES HAVE CHANGED! The need for this sort of subterfuge no longer exists.
Reply:I think the concept/theory is way past outdated. It's 2008. we actually have scientific data now to support the reasons that reunion with adoptees and their first families is NOT detrimental and is often quite healing. We are hiding behind old ideas that were not based on any kind of clinical studies to begin with.!!!!!

it seems to me that though it doesn't mention birth parent privacy, that it must have been a factor. In those days they were considered outcasts from society, as opposed to these times, when professional, well-educated single women and movie stars are choosing to have children on their own today. i think the "illegitimacy" label is fading away. at least i hope so. who cares if a child was born into or out of a marriage? it's basic human decency to treat children with love and respect regardless of their origins. what happened to the notion of judge not lest ye be judged? that quote sounds like something stemming out of old time bible-thumping intolerant religion.

i think it's important for adoptees to be able to know their origins. i would think it would also be helpful to the adoptive parents as they are raising this child to be able to have access to this background as health issues pop up.
Reply:I have one adopted child and two biological children, and my name is on the birth certificates of all three of my children. My son didn't happen to be "illegitimate".

I think it was good for him to have my name and my husband's name on his birth certificate, so when he did things like hand in a birth certificate for baseball (or whatever) he could feel like all the other kids (rather than having a stranger's name on the certificate).

I think the amended birth certificate is kind of nice for reasons like that.

As far as birth parents go, except in the case of a birth mother who was raped, I just feel that someone let an unwanted pregnancy happen by either being too careless or by taking a chance. Then, too, some adoptees are adopted because their birth mother hurt them or neglected them.

Children become adoptees because of the actions of their birth parents, and adoptive parents are the ones who have to figure out how to make their child feel secure and loved and the same as every other child. Some adoptive mothers have to pick up the pieces of damage done for years.

I think the protection and interest of the child is Number 1 at all times, and I think adoptive parents have a right to expect a certain amount of protection, as well as support in their efforts to make the child feel as secure and whole as possible.

I'm very sorry for the birth parents, but (again, except in the case of rape) they are the ones who created a situation which led to one person having to deal with being adopted and two other people (the adoptive parents) trying to deal with whatever challenges there are in trying to make an adopted child feel "like everyone else".

Birth mothers pay a heartbreaking price for their mistake(s); and I'm sorry for that, but they are the ones who created the situation. I'm not of the old fashioned kind of thinking that birth mothers ought to be ostracized or punished, but if there's some rotten situation related to the birth certificate, well, I guess, that's part of the rotten price they end up paying for letting an unwanted pregnancy occur.

Under normal and legal adoptions adoptive parents are screened for being emotionally and mentally solid. Birth parents have already created a situation which tells the world they aren't the most "solid" or mature people. I don't think it's such a horrible injustice for laws to keep an eye out to protect the child from a potentially unstable birth mother.

Right Ive been asked to a wedding in March - I want to look stunning obviously, but am unsure of what to wear so would appreciate a bit of help!

So whilst I do want to accentuate my curves - I dont want to show too much either if you know what I mean...

So any ideas would be really good as I need to get cracking on getting an outfit... vital statistics would be Im a 38E on top, size 10 waist and about 5 foot 6 - so if you have any ideas what would look good it would be much apprciated!

Reply:Hey! Well hit the sales while they're still on and try to find just a simple black dress, not too low-cut but no lower than the knee (I got a nice one at H%26amp;M). Then, with the money you save on the dress, accessorize like crazy! Get a wide belt in gold or red and some chunky jewellery, and some matching shoes :) It's a really classic style but I think from your description you'll look amazing.

Lack of Divorce Decree to apply for marriage license. What do you do?

I noticed that for my state, a copy of the divorce decree is required to apply for the marriage license. What if you don't have that? Do you write the court for a copy of the document or is just proof of divorce from Vital Statistics usually enough. Anybody who has needed this know?

You can pretty much go to the court that issued your decree for a copy. This may cost you a few bucks, but its worth it, right?
Reply:I wonder why you don't already have a copy of the decree. This seems like a valuable document that you should have obtained as soon as it was available from the courthouse.

Anyway all you have to do is go to the courthouse and ask for it and pay the money to have it copied. Mine cost $1 per page and was about 40 pages long (also includes custody agreement though that is quite lengthy).

I would also say that if the rules say you need a 'divorce degree' to get a marriage license than that is what you need. What can Vital Statistics provide you with that says you are divorced? The only proof I have is my decree.
Reply:Go to the courthouse and ask for a copy of your divorce decree. Or you can also call and they will mail you one.
Reply:You will need to contact the court that granted the decree for a certified copy of the decree. You'll pay a few bucks.
Reply:Marriage and Divorce are considered public matters. Anyone who knows you and the county in which you were legally divorced can go to the courthouse and get a copy. It may cost about 50cents per page but it will be worthwhile, right? Ask your ex too, he/she might have a copy.
Reply:Why don't you already have a copy? You can go to the court house and get a copy rom the clerk, most of the time it's just a dollar per page. Keep this one, you will need it forever.
Reply:You have to get a copy of your final divorce degree from the courthouse.

I wish all states required proof that you are legally divorced, it would help prevent a lot of people from committing bigamy.

Weird Sizing?

I'm 31yrs old, 12st 4lbs, 5'6" tall and using two tape measures I have measured my vital statistics as the following:

Chest: 46" (Bra 40F/42E)

Waist: 42" (narrowest point)

Hips: 47" (widest point)

At Marks %26amp; Spencer I usually wear a size 18, according to their size charts a size 18 is:

Chest 42"

Waist 35"

Hips 45"

or Per Una

Chest 41"

Waist 34"

Hips 45"

If I used the size chart as a guide I would need:

Chest: Size 24

Waist: Size 24

Hips: Size 20

How can this be so drastically different? My measurements are 100% accurate and I've only found one garment at M%26amp;S that doesn't fit me and that's at the waistband.

I have found that size charts lie all the time.

It is possible that they made the size chart a while ago and have since changed the patter that they are using to make the clothes.

Size doesn't really matter all that much anyhow, its really how the clothes fit your body and how confident you feel in them.

Everything they do is because it was written into law. The Congressman don't even read the bills which are hundreds of pages long. The President then signs the bill as a stimulus package and then the government bureacrats enforce the law just for the sake of it and could care less where the grant money goes because they have no incentive to get accurate statistics.

There is a lot of information excluded on it!

1) No signature of the person issuing it.

2) His parents birth places are not listed!

3) They list his fathers race as african...Africa is a continent not a race. His race is BLACK. His ethniticity is Kenyan.

4) The Hawiian seal on the document is not raised. It is only stamped. To be a legal certificate it would have to be raised. No vital statistics agency in any state would fail to make it a raised stamp. Use your computers magnifyer to verify this.

5) Towards the middle bottom of the document there is a date stamped when it was supposedly issued. Use your magnifyer and you will see hat the date is backwards. NO office of statistics in this country would make such a mistake. This birth certificate is photo shopped. WHY?

I asked a question about birth certificates before. But I need some clarification...

I need my birth certificate ASAP for a passport. And read or heard that it is cheaper if you go get it in person, right?

And where should I go, hospital? I heard vital statistics, how many are there in a state? One for each county? I live in Somerville, NJ. I know there is a site online that ships birth certs but I am trying to avoid that.

And when I go to this vital statistics place, what do I need as proofs for them? My drivers license, anything else? I know my SS# but have no card.

Any quick help would be great, the clock is ticking for me...

i was recently looking at my birth certificate and came across, in bold letters at the bottom, that it said the birth certificate was not a real document. now i understand that but what i don't understand is that they said the real document could be found at the vital statistics office at_________________ where the real document can be obtained. i don't understand why they left that part out. all of the rest of te certificate was filled in, but why didn't they fill in the blank where the legal document could be found? or did they just forget?

Reply:If you go online to the county/town where you were born, there should be an address for the County Clerk's Office, which keeps the records for registering births, marriages, deaths, etc. Your birth certificate should have a pressed seal on it with the town/county name.

One suggestion to resolve all this is that if there is a God, He has been revealing Himself to His people since the start, He just does so in ways that a particular people can best understand. Is that sacrilege? I dunno. It seems to have a ring of truth to it, simply considering how He revealed himself at different times within the Jewish and Christian scriptures.

Technology is a good thing in many ways...it can help with education, it's vital for a lot of health care procedures, it creates jobs, etc.

However, it can be a bad thing in many ways as well. For example, look at the statistics of obesity in children today - they'd rather stay in and play video games, watch TV or be on the computer instead of being outside, playing and discovering in the "real world". Relationships are being hurt because of technology addiction (video game addiction, computer addiction, etc).

With all this technology, are we forgetting about real life?

Yes, I believe people are bored if they don't have any of this to distract themselves, we have forgotten about having fun, using our own creativity to amuse ourselves, no real stimulation is happening, with people sitting around, we arent keeping fit the way we use to, so of course the brain isn't releasing endorphins that make you feel happy.

with email, people choose to keep in contact through a computer rather than using a phone or going to visit someone. we don't have the conversations that we use to cause we are so busy sitting behind a computer distracted and as a result relationships suffer as you say, I've seen people enraged if their favourite program hasn't recordered, like it is the end of the world. people having accidents to get home in time to watch a program, people swearing if their game mulfunctions, subliminal information from the tv doesn't help either in the communication process. so in regards to the simple life things have been so much more complicated through competition with these things, life becomes the storylines on tv, movies etc, rather than stories from real life events.

It is possible to enjoy the simple things in life if we remember what part in life technology plays, it is not significant, we have made a choice to be entertained by these mediums, rather than enjoying what is outside our doorsteps, I think it is a contributing factor to depression in that people are not getting enough sunlight to there eyes and not socialising enough with others.

As importnt is that lack of taskd, meaningful contribution to famly/community (team sports can be just as mind dulling if not obesity forming) I believe also leads to depression in adolexcents. the isolation, lack of physical activity (those endorphons just do not leap up)And lack of reality associated with the tech activities increase searation of person from culture, emotions, and can stimulate anger/rage based on the false premises presented by games/music etc.
Reply:It's definitely possible to teach kids about the simple things in life. Plus it's a fantastic opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children and teach them at the same time. For example taking kids on a nature walk. You can both learn about the plants, insects and animals that you see. Walks along the beach, especially where there are rocks with tide pools. Typically, one can find all sorts of sea life if you're willing to take the time to look. I feel that parents should really make an effort when children are very young to makke time to explore the natural wonders of our earth. It helps to build strong family bonds as well as an appreciation and respect for those things that are right there in front of us.

However, I feel like certain deep human characteristics will not change so quickly. Our appreciation for natural beauty, for instance. Our desire to interact with REAL people instead of sketchy photographs or online gamers from across the world. And ultimately, technology gives us more time to explore these worthwhile pursuits. Reply:As far as your stance about obese children, I would have to say that is more of a parenting problem. Now I am by no means saying that the parents of the world are doing a bad job, by no means at all. I just remember my parents giving me limits on when I could watch TV or play my (original) Nintendo. My mother would say "It is a right, not a babysitter." I would have to say that in order to instill in the children that playin outside is just as fun, that using their imagination can be as stimulating as pixelated adventures, that they need to be taught that starting at an early age.

But on the other part of your question, the only way people are going to be able to just relax in nature and the "simple" things in life, they have to force themselves out of their normal routines, go for a hike, walk that 2 blocks to the coffee stand instead of driving... Does anyone have a clue how that works??? We signed the AOP so my daughter could have her Dad's last name. We were engaged at the time but we are broken up for good now. She is almost 3 months old and I never sent off for her birth certificate. I received her SS card and it has her Dad's last name on it. Can I send off for her birth certificate and a new SS card with my last name on them or what?? The Texas Vital Statistics website is messed up so I can't get any info off there. You will have to go through legal channels to have her named changed. And the father will have to agree to the change. Thank God you have his last name, it will be easier to get support. (and likewise some men like this) Those are just examples, but the point is that people have varying opinions on what exactly the ideal vital stats for a woman are.

The skeleton revealed no cause of death and the sheriff's office has been assuming it probably was natural.

The man was found in a tent at a campsite in a wooded, remote location. His trousers had rotted away, but the date of currency found at his campsite indicates he apparently had been there no longer than five years.

The letter leaves open the possibility the man was suicidal, although there is no reason to believe he killed himself. Perhaps he was terminally ill and chose to take his life. The man also could have succumbed to unexpected illness or injury while on an outing in the Flat Tops.

Much about the case is conjecture, including a theory that the man entered the Flat Tops Wilderness at a trailhead on the north and hiked four or five days across elevations of 11,000 feet before setting up his tent on a southern drainage at about 9,700 feet. That theory is supported by two moisture-proof National Geographic trail maps of the Flat Tops with a route drawn across them to the area where the remains were discovered. But it's possible the man picked up the maps someone else had marked and left behind.

My psychic skills are undeveloped, but sometimes I get strong feelings about certain information.

I believe his first name is John or George, and his last name starts with Mac or Mc.

He was not suicidal, but he was terminally ill, and believed that no-one could help him. He was poor in the end, after spending his lifetime's financial establishment on looking for a cure. His condition did not affect his ability to walk, carry a heavy load, survive in very cold weather or remain sane when alone for long periods. He came out to hike alone to establish peace with God, and pray that the research he financed will help his children out of this hereditary condition. His condition was physical, but it affected him neurologically, leading to mild psychosis including paranoia, boredom and hypersensitivity to light and sound. His immunological and circulatory system was sound till his last days, but there was something bad in the food he was consuming.

In his last days he became complacent, forgetting to eat and drink, and due to the loss of fat and muscle on his body, painlessly died of hypothermia in his sleep.

I hope this helps. It may not be accurate; it's just a feeling I get from reading the above report.

I have just found out for sure that my husband is a bigamist. What do I do? I'm so scared! The snowpack in the Cascades, it was said, shrank by 50 percent in the last half-century. It's been presented as glaring evidence of the cost exacted by global warming — the drying up of a vital water source.

That statistic has been repeated in a government report, on environmental-advocacy Web sites and in media coverage. Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels recently mentioned it in a guest column in The Seattle Times.

Here's the problem: The number is dead wrong.

The debunking of this statistic, and the question of just how much the state's snowpack shrank, is stirring up a heated debate among the region's climate scientists.

On Monday, it escalated further when University of Washington researcher and State Climatologist Philip Mote stripped a colleague of his title as associate state climatologist, triggering concerns that scientific dissent is being quashed.

There are too many holes or exceptions in the global warming theory that if any of it came to light all the money going to "research" would dry up, and these people don’t want to give up the golden goose.

There is a concerted effort to silence people who disagree; fact is any one who opposes the "gospel of global warming" is a target. Michael Chriton was even blasted for his Book “State of fear” for making claims against global warming.

In fact if solar output does prove to be the culprit, I guarantee when temperatures drop around 2012 the far left will scream success as though their actions were the cause.

Only about 0.5% of all C02 in the atmosphere can be contributed to man made causes. The oceans are the largest contributor of C02 into the atmosphere.

People tend to forget that between 1940 and 1980, the earths temperature was decreasing at such a rate, that many scientist thought we were headed for another ice age.

You would think with the post WWll increase in manufacturing and the increased release of pollutants into the atmosphere that the temperature would have increased.

Im a sceptic on manmade global warming, to many claims made so far, have been proved to be false and misleading.

I think we would be better suited to worry more about what pollutants were are releasing into the enviroment such as lead, mercury, pcb's etc that have been scientificly shown to show up in ground water and animals .

Huge sheets of ice are breaking off of Antarctica. Companies are preparing for the opening of shipping lanes through the arctic because the ice is moving back so much. Reply:Actually, there is a great deal of debate regarding glacial and icepack degredation globally. In some areas, there is no doubt that this is occurring. In others, glaciers are increasing and icepack is thickening (Greenland, Iceland and Antartica). As one responder has said, the problem is associating causes with the observed effects. And that is the real delima.

There is data that indicates that CO-2 levels are increasing and that this is THE main cause of global warming. But, the facts do no seem to support that the increase in CO-2 levels are anywhere near the levels that would impact global climate.

As a demonstration: The earths atmosphere could be viewed as a football field. Nitrogen is the most common and starting at the goal line, would take you to the 78 yard line. Oxygen is the next largest part of our atmosphere and would take you all the way to the 99 yard line. That leaves one yard, most of which is composed of the inert gas Argon which will bring you to within 3 1/2 inches of the goal line, about the thickness of the line. CO-2 comprises only 1 inch of the remaining distance. 1 inch in 100 yards.

Carbon dioxide has increased in the last 50 years right? Do you know how much in our scale described above? Just 3/8 of an inch in 100 yards. It may be a lot more CO-2 but it comprises only a tiny fraction of our atmosphere.

Does anyone really want to say that this fractional increase is what is driving the planet to warm globally? Can you really hang your hat on that factor as the factor causing global warming? I can't.

If the rise in CO-2 levels are a GLOBAL phenomenon, then it would be reasonable to assume that this would result in temperatures everywhere on the globe to be increaseing, correct? The fact is this is not the case. Some areas of the planet are in fact cooler than others, even areas that are quite close to each other on a global scale.

Example: Temperature recordings for the city of New York from the period 1822 to 2000 showed that temperatures increased approximately 5 degrees Fahrenheit in 150 years. Source:United State Historical Climatology Network.

Yet the city of Albany, NY for the period 1820 to 2000 show a decrease in termerature of 1/2 degree.

If warming is a Global situation, how can two geographical locations so close to each other experience such divergent temperature changes?

This is a time period of over 100 years in each case so this is NOT a matter of "local weather" differences. This is a matter of Climate which is the study of weather over long periods of time.

So we factor out the argument that the differences are due to local weather. How is this explained?

The fact is that no one knows how much present warming trends (fraction of a degree globally) are the result of natural phenomena or how much may be man made. NO ONE.

Our planet has experienced climate change gloabally over millenia. Warming periods, little ice ages, warming again, big ice ages.

Computer models predicting warming of the planet actually vary by as much as 400% which puts them all into the category of guesses. In fact the future cannot be assessed or predicted. You can only guess. An informed guess is still a guess.

I believe that we should do everything reasonable to protect our environment but at the same time I am convinced that we know practically nothing about how to do that without causing more damage in the process.

I have objectively observed that both sides of this debate are very prone to politicized science. I believe that the foundation funding for research on both sides by eclological groups and industry are very prone to being influenced by the providers of the funding. Pretty much, those that pay for the research get pretty much the results they "expect".

Lastly, the amount of dogmatic rhetoric expressed by people on this topic that is not supported by valid scientific proof makes this topic more one of an almost religious character. Much faith is placed in the "leaders" of the debate on both sides. And unfortunately very few of us actually go to the extensive effort to read, study and consider the science on BOTH sides of the debate BEFORE arriving at our conclusions about its validity.

This is unfortunate and can only lead to emotionally based responces that either overly restrict industry and commerce or that could ignore needed husbandry of our ecology.

Whenever public opinion is being shaped (by either side) to the point that one sides "guesses" are viewed as something that "everybody knows", we have lost our collective objectivity and have opened ourselves up to being manipulated as a society.

My study of this topic is not complete. I am continuing to learn more about it. My viewpoints today are different than they were 5 years ago and will be different 5 years from now.

I do not believe the theory of global warming should be a matter of dogma.

If you feel that your integrity is important to you, then study this debate from BOTH viewpoints and expose yourself to data sets from BOTH sides before becoming a prophet of doom about something that "everyone knows" when in fact almost NO ONE knows hardly anything about it beyond their own emotional beliefs (Faith).
Reply:Of course the ice is melting. This has been going on for thousands of years. But there is also new ice forming on areas formerly not ice packed. This whole idea is crazy and mind-boggling with all the money that is being spent on it. about 3 years ago i had a very good friend who became terminally ill and homeless but I also allowed him to use my address to get his mail because he was on the streets with nowhere to go (his only living relative moved to North Carolina and he was too ill to transport which is why the man became homeless to start with)

I keep getting notices from the ohio BMV the man's driver's license is suspsended now so to get his final affairs in order I called 2 places today that is the vital statistics dept in my area to attempt to get his death certificate and they won't release it without his family's consent and the relative can not be located

I also called the ohio bureau of motor vehicles trying to get this taken care of they say without a death certificate they will not stop this pure idiot behavior

What can I do about this now?? It's getting on my last nerve and I live in central ohio for the record............

Write "return to sender, deceased" on everything that comes in his name and put it back in the mailbox. Eventually the post office should stop delivering it. If you are getting third class mail for him, like catalogs, you will still keep getting that since they are usually marked "current resident."

Did you go to the on-line site for the Arkansas Vital Statistics? They should have a link for how to order birth certificates. That's how I found mine in Virginia.

Reply:I know up where I live in Michigan.. you can go to the County Courthouse.. whichever county the birth is registered at, talk to the person in charge of records, they will reproduce the certificate for you.

I was born in one state under a last name... then my mother changed my last name, before I was grown. I attended and graduated from a school in another state, then moved back to my birth state. Now I am grown and since my mother has passed and I have no idea where my birth certificate is. I am also trying to get my drivers license. I do have my social security card, but the department of vital statistics say that they cannot find my birth certificate. I also am married now with a social security card in my married name to. I don't know what to do from this point on to get either my license or my birth certificate. I also have 4 children, so is there any other way that I can prove my I dentity like my school records with my social security

You should talk to your mom's siblings and find out what your previous last name was and then go to the department again and ask them if they have a certificate under that last name and if that does not work then you should show them your new social security number and see if they can give you a new card.

However, if you can get info from your mom's relatives and go back to the Vital Statistics people you should be able to sort it out. You might have to sign affidavits or something.

I understand the reasons for the more stringent requirements, but in the case here, the passport department was able to make an exception for valid cause.

Reply:I would strongly suggest you consider ordering the birth certificate through VitalChek. I've used them in the past and they are very fast and very efficient. If you know the county where your Grandmother was born, you could probably receive the certificate in 3 to 5 days for about $32 including FedEx shipping. Ordering through the state takes about 3 weeks minimum - even through VitalChek. Hope this helps.
Reply:Your grandmother has to have a birth certificate somewhere because birth certificates have been required in MN since 1907 regardless of where the baby was born.

Ancestry will only give you birth information for babies born in MN between 1935 and 2002.

Here's the website for the MN Dept of Health with instructions on how to obtain a certified birth certificate and their phone number. The passport office will not accept a non-certified copy.

I am planning on having a homebirth and wasnt sure (in MA) where I would have to register the baby after the birth to get the baby's birth certificate. I called city hall and they told me that there was a woman who takes care of that. Anyone who had a homebirth? What is the paperwork afterward and where did you have to go? Ask your midwife--many midwives take care of the paperwork themselves and send it in as part of their fee. Even if they don't send it all in, the midwife will tell you what to do.

Reply:First of all you need a mid-wife. Perferably female it will make you feel more comfortable. Look in your telephone book under phyician's than look for mid-wife. A mid-wife is someone who knows how to deliver babies and knows exactly what papers ned to be filed.

Sometimes you can find an OB-GYN wlling to come to your home on a house call. Ask your local Family Planning or Hospital to find a mid-wife. I wish you all the luck in the world.

My father did not sign any relinquishment papers for my adoption. Would the agency have been obliged to publish a legal notice to give him a chance to come forward? and if so, where are such notices published?

My mother knew who he was but he was not named on my birth certificate (which I haven't seen but vital Statistics tell me so)

Reply:I don't know about my birthfather and his rights that was almost 50 years age- however with my adopted son- our attorney put notices in newspapers and other places and gave him a certain amount of time- I think it was 60 days- and when they did not hear anything- they severed his rights legally. If you are looking for your birth father- I hope that you can find him.

Another man's name was put on the birth certificate, the baby was given up for adoption and now the mother has contacted him 7 years later to say it was his ! If his name was not on the birth certificate then I don't think they (the agency) would be required to publish a legal notice. Your mother could have said she did not know who he was, etc. No offense to your mother but that is the truth of the matter. Are you wanting to find him now ? i dont think any relinquishment papers would have been signed until after i was born, so i would have to guess he didnt sign them. and as far as i know he was not issued a legal notice. it was just left at the will of lori. that was 35 years ago, so i would assume the laws were the same as when you were born.

Reply:It's hard to say what the laws were in that state then. But now, if the bio mother names or does not name the bio father on the birth certificate, the procedures are the same. If he is know and can be located through a diligent search or bio mom's info, then he is served. If it is a good serve and he doesn't respond, his rights can be terminated. If he is not located, then the info about him and bio mom is published -- where depends on the city and state. Some are in little legal newspapers that even bored attorneys don't read, others are in large newspapers, others are in small community newspapers. No bio father I have ever known steps forward from a publication. FYI, some states are now moving toward skipping these steps all together and allowing a bio fathers rights to be terminated if he does not register with paternity registry in that state. Problem is, most guys have never even heard of paternity registry. This could change not only adoptions but relationships in the future, with guys perhaps taking more responsibility for possible pregnancies. We'll see.

Reply:37 years ago, not sure what the requirements were for publishing legal notices, but, now they would be required to do so. Most newspapers have pages of of ads labeled as "Legal Notices" and they run through out the paper.

These include house sales foreclosures, public meetings, and custody hearings where one parent's location is unknown.

The ads typically run several times a week for 4-6 weeks. The time frame could vary by state depending upon their requirements.

My guess is, that back then, the agency would only be legally obligated to publish the notice if they knew his name and possible hometown or last known address.

I just heard another radio person talking about how that a little

over 3000 men and women have been killed in Iraq and that Pres. Bush

needs to pull them out now! Let's put this in perspective. I too

don't want any Americans to be killed for any reason but I understand

that this does happen in war. That being said, here are the facts.

All of these very brave men and women are volunteers. They were not

drafted like I was during the Vietnam War. They are the most

educated, best trained, best equipped soldiers, airmen, and sailors

in the history of our country. Many of them re-enlist 2 or 3 times so

that they may return to Iraq. Doesn't sound like they don't think the

effort is a waste of time and lives. Ok, we have lost 3300 or so

brave Americans in a little over 4 years in combat. Now, using

information from any of the "Vital Statistics" websites you will find

that: right here in United States there are over 20,000 murders

on our own streets EACH year what do you think?

You know there are liberals in the military in Iraq also. There have been libreals in the military as long as there has been a military in this country. Just like there have been gays in the military since the boys got off the boat at Jamestown in 1607.

Sure all our troops volunteered to be where they are today but they have been lied to by the government. They were promised a Year in country and two out country for training and reequipping.. Now they get a year in and six months out and then back to Iraq. The equipment that the soliders and Marines need to do their jobs of keeping the peace in Iraq is not there. So they go to do a job with worn equipment and shot up Hummers and Strykers.

The US Military is tired and they see the US as not willing to sacrifice for the troops and to step up to the fire step and take the heat of battle. WWII was fought by 59% of the population , Vietnam and Korea by 30%, Iraq and Afghanistan is being fought by just 1% of the US Population.

We are now 5 years into the war and the Army and Marines are just getting to asking Congress to fund and increase in troops and that's for next year. At the rate that the government is going we won't have more troops until 2009 at the earliest. That is if they can get the volunteers as the enlistment rates are down at this time. So what happens we have to start drafting again because we can't do our commitments overseas. I was against going to war in Iraq from the start I though that there was no crediable evidence to backup the case but no one wanted to hear as a Vietnam vet I knew the dangers of war and it horrors but no one would listen. I am against the War but I support the troops who are sent into harms way at the orders of the commander and cheif because this country didn't support the veterns of my war when I was I was overseas and fighting it. War is not to be entered into lightly and we did. Now to get out of Iraq it will take the United States about one year if we start right now. That's to move all the equipment ,wrecked and salvagable, troops and supplies out of country and

The fact that more people have died in Iraq than on Sept. 11 is shocking but do any of you feel as shocked at the daily causualty repaorts as you did on that dark day. NO! The fact that 3,000 people died all at once on Sept 11 is a shock because we say they didn't expect it they were civilians but these soldiers well they expect to die and they die in dribs and drabs, no problem. Face it folks Sept. 11 was just like Pearl Harbor we were caught with our pant down and we got our asses kicked.

By the way did you know that most of the military is on stop loss that means you can't get out even if your time is up. That sounds like impressment to me. Didn't this coutry fight a war against a country that siezed our sailors and citizens and make them serve under duress in the naval forces of that country?

i was recently looking at my birth certificate and came across, in bold letters at the bottom, that it said the birth certificate was not a real document. now i understand that but what i don't understand is that they said the real document could be found at the vital statistics office at_________________ where the real document can be obtained. i don't understand why they left that part out. all of the rest of te certificate was filled in, but why didn't they fill in the blank where the legal document could be found? or did they just forget?

I have tried many times before when I was a teenager. I was a throw-a-way baby with no name or family names. So, I have nothing to go on and can only assume I was born in Chicago. Yes, I went to public school and graduated from high school. I do have a social security card and have been working since college. I'm 49 now and they say I will need one when my times comes to retire. At the vital statistic office - I had no info for them which meant no help from them. The people who raised me gave me a name and they have been deceased since 1983. Not knowing my fam is one thing, but not having a birth certificate is another. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. BTW, Vital Statistic gave me a little form saying they couldn't find one for me. Wonder can I use that for the rest of my life?

How Can I Get A Birth Certificate?
There is something very strange about all of this...my guess is (and I could be off base here) you were already a member of this family and they were hiding that fact. You need to start asking questions of their siblings...people who knew them when you arrived on the scene. Does not sound like you were born in a hospital. Get school records, census records, church records (if any). Sounds like you were never registered for a reason.

If you were adopted their would be a record at the county court house. Somebody gave birth to you. Keep all your records in one file. Most often when adoption occurrs it happens in the place where you were born. You were born in the 1950's and a child out of wed lock was considered "shame on the family" and great lengths were taken to hide that shame. It was all about fear ... they could not help it. It is just the way it was in those times. Keep on trucking and I hope you have luck. Leave no stone unturned.

Reply:In order to get a social security card they had to produce a birth certificate . Maybe social security has one on file.

also check with the schools you went to . I had to give a birth certificate for each child I had in school.

Reply:I would see if you can find the online vital statistics....from your state. Perhaps, go to the hospital you were born, Perhaps seek help in gathering information, on the people who raised you. Maybe talk to some friends of thiers, or any kind of family member you have. Talk to manager etc. There is help out there. Perhaps the social security can find who applied for your social security card, give you a name to go by. Looks like you have a lot of research to do. Check with the schools you went to, perhaps information, can stem from these places. The people who rasied you may have collected from social security for keeping you. They SS does have a website, and you could call, or email, and ask, what can you do? I feel for you as now a days a birth certificate is a must have. But am sure if you contact even the local social service, they can give you resources. Good luck...
Reply:You can contact the federal government, and they can certify your birth. This had to be done for my husband who was born overseas to American parents in the military, but never had a birth certificate.

Just a side note, you have a lot to be proud of, as you probably know. You are clearly accomplished and have made a success of your life.

Reply:I've heard that the more paper you have, the better your chances. If you have copes of school records, immunizations, work records, pictures, etc. you should gatther them up. If you have any witnesses from your parents who raised you that would be good. I'm assuming you weren't legally adopted. If you were, your adoptions records should help also. Talk to the Social Security office or Circuit Clerk office where you lived when you were "adopted". Good luck, and it's good that you are planning ahead.

How did you get a social security card? They generally require some sort of ID for that.

Perhaps I should make this clearer. My killer is a law enforcement officer and he is targeting his fellow officers that reside in small towns across the country. He's pretty good around a computer and all he would need is the names of various officers in these towns. The rest he can get from vital statistics and/or other county records. So my question is, for an insider, is there information on websites that would list names of officers, with or without photos or any other pertinent information about the officer. Perhaps a city dept.'s roster, or sheriff's roster, the union, the benevolent society's roster, PAL, etc. etc. And don't forget the VICAP question for all of you detectives?

Here's something I WILL tell you about the police: most of the people we put in jail would like to hurt us and our families, so we don't give out any of that information.

And once again, VICAP is granted on a need to know and a right to know basis, even violent offenders are allowed some privacy.

Don't know where i was born?

I do not have a birth certificate. I filed the forms and paid $36 to vital statistics in texas. My mother has passed but i called my father and he said i was born in beaumont tx. after 8 weeks vital stat. informed me that they have no record of my birth. i have a ss card but without an id i cannot get records from the SSA to find out where i was born. I cant get id without birth cert. i can't get a job without an id. so i'm 18 yrs old on my own with no income. i need help!! anything you can think of i will try.

This is the conundrum in america these days. Without this piece of paper you can't get another. Another agency wants that other piece of paper.... it becomes endless. A lot of this depends on what money you have.

Talk to your Dad and find out the specific place you were born. Even the doctor who attended. Unless you were born against a rock in the desert there is a record of your birth. You need to get off waiting for responses.... you need to spend serious phone time until you get someone who can help you.

Have you ever had a state ID? A visit to the local police station would help either way. They can do a record check and produce a document that says you do have a SSN. There is a printout that you can get from Social Security that does not require ID. Or if you keep at it phone wise eventually you will find someone who would tell you what you need to do. Think about it in the way as if you were trying to prove that you are a legal american.

If you really wanted to get to it go to whatever courthouse and apply for a voter registration card. Usually there are old ladies who know every politician that would help. Call whatever local TV staion is near you. Why would they help? Well there is all sorts of people because of the new anti-terror laws who are scrambling for birth certificates and such. It is a good story or issue.... especially regarding the illegal alien thing.

But there is another thing and I did this once upon a time when I lost everything. My mother filled out a form for the Passport Agency saying that she was my mother and certified (sounds odd) that she had known me for 5 years. They issued me a passport and all was done after that.

First place to go though.... police station. Think about if you commited a crime. They could find out all that you need to know in a day. They will help because if you have your father's birth certificate, your parents marriage certificate or whatever it could be as easy as going up in front of a judge.

Reply:Texas is notorious for charging for public records searches and retrieval, but some states will allow you to search their public records - including birth records (but without disclosing personal information like date of birth) - for free online. Check out every state you remember living in, and ask your dad where all you have lived since you were born.

But where your parents lived might not be the answer. Call the hospitals and birth centers in Beaumont (there aren't but a few), 'cause there will be birth records there. Is it possible that you were born at home, in the backseat of your parents' car, at a non-medical birth center (i.e., you were delivered by a midwife), or somewhere else other than an "official" medical facility?

Beaumont is only a few miles from the Louisiana state line - any chance you were born there? Were either of your parents in the military? Any chance you were born overseas, or on a military base? If not, make sure something crazy didn't happen, like you were born while your parents were on vacation in Mexico.

No luck there, try checking genealogy and records-search websites (ancestry.com or gov-records.com are just a couple). Some such sites will let you do limited searches for free. Check for yourself first, but you may need to check your parents (to find out where they were living when you were born).

If you can't find what you're looking for, pay for a more detailed genealogy or records search. It doesn't cost that much more than what you already paid to the State of Texas.

I did not realize it but I was sitting in a place where the boys could look up my skirt very easily. Later when I understood what was happening I got embarassed, but later I felt a little excited and had to touch myself. So please be careful and wear long skirts to school. That's what I do now.

Can anyone tell me another way to find out the exact time of my birth? Oddly enough, it is not on my birth Cert. I am not an only child so the parents are not sure of the exact time either. You have to pay and become a member to get any vital statistic information. (which I think sucks.) What else is there?

Gather up an hour's worth of high energy music (your favorite of course) and dance for an hour EVERYDAY. If you're only 13 you'll definitely see results, because I'm much older and I've lost 5 pounds in 10 days by simply dancing for an hour.
Reply:I know this may sound cliche - but it's most important to focus on things about yourself that make you a good person/character.

In terms of your size, you can't just look at numbers because there are so many factors. Are you muscular? Muscle weighs a lot more than fat. Some people have higher weight numbers but are proportioned well. Also, you are 13 so your body is still developing and changing.

One thing you can do, which I recommend whether or not you're concerned with weight, is to exercise. It will help you shed pounds you don't want, build muscle for tone, and just make you feel so much better all the way around - it definitely reduces stress and gives you a lot of energy!
Reply:At 13 your body is going through lots of changes, and dieting is not really safe answer. If you are unhappy with your body, try exercise (it releases endorphins, which make you feel great and can boost your self esteem). You should also try watching what you eat, but not restricting calories, just the type of calories, you know, fat, carbs, ect.

But really, everyone is a different size, no two bodies are the same, and you need to feel confident that your body is how it should be. Our society always tells us that we as women have to be a certain size, but it is up to you whether or not you want to believe that too.

The most important thing for you to do is be healthy, and gain confidence, and everything else will resolve itself.

It often takes only once for users to be "hooked". The dangers for non'users are what drug addiction does to families and friends-endless. The damage to society-endless.There is no detoxification process for cocaine addicts, other than "coming down" or "jonesing".

You really have a lot of time on your hand if you constantly obsess about what other people are doing in their lives. Many women myself included were quite self sufficient and economically stable at that age. If a women chooses to have a child then that is her right. not yours Who are you to judge anyone, matrimony is a man made procedure and a child born out of wedlock is no less likely to be cherished. and loved than one born legitimate.

Most women that are 25-29 years old that decide to be single mothers are most likely set educationally, financially, job wise, and mature enough to be able to handle being a single mother. Do your sorces tell you that these women in the 25-29 range that are single mothers CHOSE that, and didn't end up like that by accident? If a woman is unmarried and in that age range and she wants kids, it is better for her to have the kids then than it is for her to wait a few years when she gets married. After a certain age(mid to late 30's), there are more chances for problems with birth and the child being less healthy when born to an older woman.

And how in the hell does the "bastard" or "illegitimate" status effect the way a person is or how they impact society? We aren't all nobles that need legitimate heirs to carry on our legacy. Reply:You bring up a good discussion question. How does it affect us? I always wonder about what will happen to these women and children. Are the women self-supporting or just accidentally got pregnant and now must deal with the consequences? Who will financially support the child? What about growing up in a household where the primary breadwinner is gone most of the time in order to make a living and is not there to raise and train that child up? Why didn't they choose abortion? Are they living with the child's father and if so, what do they expect will happen to that relationship? Is this child going to have any role models growing up or just left to fend for himself? Are the woman's parents going to raise the child?

There are just so many questions and difficulties in life now that bringing a child into the world is difficult under the best of circumstances with two loving married and committed parents, so why would a single woman opt for this? What is she thinking?

In case you're wondering at this point, I think it's a really bad idea for all concerned and yes, I would think that abortion would generally be a better alternative than to bring a child into the world that you cannot take care of and raise up with a good education and the ability to be successful in life.

assist me in making an informed decision. I am scheduled to have Prostate Cancer Biopsy on 05/24/07. Here is a brief history of events up till now:

Vital statistics and hx are as follows: Age: 38; Sex: Male; Ht: 5' 5"; Wt: 162 lbs; Father: recently passed away at the age of 73 2ndry Prostate Cancer which got metastasized and as a result he had bone cancer as well; Mother: has diabetes and previously has had benign tumor removed; Older Brother: Healthy; Race: Asian-Indian.

On 04/23/07 blood test done and the results indicated PSA level of 3.5, subsequent to this FreePSA test done on 05/04/07 and PSA level: 3.68. The normal range is 0-2.5. Based on some some chart scoring had a value of 8 indicative that I probably have a 24% chance of having prostate cancer. Visited Urologist on 05/16/07 and DRE was conducted and was normal. Should I wait 8 weeks and have another PSA test or go for Biopsy as suggested by the Urologist? Don't want to be sliced %26amp; diced but also want peace of mind!

The above answer has the right conclusion, although all the facts are wrong.

While PCa at your age is rare, it's hardly unknown. You have an significantly elevated risk due to the fact that your father had it.

PSA is not an indication of cancerous tissue, it's produced by both normal and diseased prostate tissue. The absolute number turns out to be fairly meaningless, as "normal" could be anywhere from .5 to 8, mostly depending on the size of your prostate and general health. It's best to have regular PSA tests, and to keep a chart of your results. A rapid increase in PSA is more concerning than a high absolute number.

Free PSA is the percent of PSA which isn't attached to protein. If it's very low, there is a higher chance that your PSA reading is caused by cancer.

A DRE can only detect cancer when it's extensive enough to be palpable. In parts of Europe, adoption of PSA testing has been slower than in the US, and DRE is still a preferred detection technique. But DRE will miss cancer in it's earliest, most treatable stage. In the US, the overwhelming majority of men are diagnosed with biopsy following abnormal PSA readings, and never reach the stage of having a positive DRE.

If I were in your place, I would take the biopsy. Although biopsy isn't the most pleasant experience, it's the only way to find peace of mind. If it's negative, I would continue being vigilant, and have PSA tests every six months, charting the results. Given your family history, it pays not to take chances.

What you can expect from the biopsy is a few minutes of discomfort, followed by a month of bleeding. It's not the worst thing that can happen to you.
Reply:I'm a pathologist in Romania and from my experience you have very little chance of having prostate cancer. First of all you are younger than the youngest man ever diagnosed with prostate cancer (he was 39). Second, the PSA level is a little higher than normal, not enough to suspect a cancer. Then, the DRE is normal what means there is a very low probability of cancer. But nothing is impossible and nobody can tell you 100% sure you don't have cancer without a biopsy.

So, my advice is to undergo the biopsy. Its result is the only thing certain so you will get the peace of your mind after it.

Reply:I'm currently being treated for Prostate Cancer after Radical Prostatectomy last year. I agree that you should probably go ahead and get the biopsy tomorrow. Should you decide to wait know that you are not in a life and death situation at this point. Overall Prostate Cancer tends to slow growing so you could wait and have PSA tests done every 3 to 4 months and see what is happening.

Reply:the critical value method is very useful in that you can find the value of the sample statistic that will reject the null hypothesis so if you are repeating the same experiment many times in the field you can find out the conclusion of the hypothesis test right then without having to make any other calculations.

the p-value method, i think, is more useful in that by reporting the p-value you allow others to draw their own conclusions. perhaps you want to test at the 2% level, but the read wants to test at the 5% level, by reporting the p-value you can both make conclusions. the fix level, or critical value, method does not allow for this.

the relationship is that if you test at the, say 5% level, you will have the same conclusion from either method. the critical value method is not as good for papers, but the p-value method requires more calculations in the field to get a quick solution.

I don't think you can do that. You have to put the father's name on the BC or leave it blank. And, the non gender specific name is null and void. If you're not married and you want 2 names on BC-- the other party has to sign a paternity form. The person making the certificate probably won't allow-- because it must be male and female. Sorry.
Reply:It is not accurate and your child deserves "the truth". You have made decisions for yourself by choice but your child deserves facts and truth. It may save the child's life someday or their child's life to know biological history.

It's not a matter of social or legal acceptance, it's a matter of fact and offering your child honesty.
Reply:It's not legal, and to be honest it is in the child's best interest to have the biological parents listed on the birth certificate for the sake of knowing what illnesses to watch out for. For example the father's side could be at risk for breast cancer or sickle cell or high blood pressure or many other illnesses that can follow the family line.

Plus, if you were to ever try and use it for a joint custody claim odds are the child would be taken from the home and the both of you could be doing time in the slammer. Kinda negates the benefits of it.

As for the novelty of having both parents on the birth certificate, a birth certificate is not about who the parents are. It's so that the government knows who got who knocked up.

Birth certificates in most states list mother and father not parent #1 and parent #2. Knowingly putting down a name that is neither the mother or the father of a child is fraud.

My son was born in November of 2006. At the time of his birth, his father and I were not married and my maiden name was put on his birth certificate. His father and I were married in December of last year, and I would like to have our son's surname changed to the family name. Birth certificates are not under military jurisdiction. they come from whatever state that you were born in, and therefore that state's lregs apply.

I was born in a military hospital, but like someone else said.. it is NOT a valid birth certificate.. it is a record of birth and is not a legal document.
Reply:Get your birth certificate from the state and you're only authorized a military I.D. if you are active, dependent of active duty, retired or if you were honorably distarged and you still recieve benifits. That's it.
Reply:Our daughter was born in a military hospital and we even had to pay for her birth certificate. The military birth certificate is free, except it's not recognized by school districts and such. So, you have to apply to get a copy from the state you were born in and it's not free.

I don't know about ID cards. I know as active duty, they're free and they will be when he retires in a couple years. Best way to find out for sure is to call the ID section at the nearest military installation.

Look around in your area and see if you can find a portrait photography student who has real talent and see if they might be interested in putting together your portfolio for a good price.

Usually there is a photo display section in your local library.

Go look at the work posted there and see if you can find anything which catches your eye such as someone with a good lens for portraiture.

Jot down some names and call them up. If they don't do that sort of work chances are they know someone who does.

You need a good photographer who has talent and style.

On the GS forum there is always much dispute about the reliability of statistics cited by pro-feminst sources (pro-feminist websites and wikipaedia) and those from other sources. Even statistics from government and government agencies are questionable. So how trustworthy are the 'statistics' which are presented to us?

I have yet to see here any cited statistics which reveal the 'confidence level' of the statistics presented. Confidence level goes from 0% to 100% and is calculated according to the number of samples, the typicality of the samples and so on. (We were taught an equation for doing all this.)

Should we disregard the statistics which omit this vital information?

Confidence intervals are different than being statistically significant. For example, a person may have an IQ of 100 with a 95% confidence interval of 90-110, meaning that we can say with 95% confidence that his/her score is within that range.

Anything that gets published as "significant" usually will have to be significant at the %26lt; 05. level. However, if we have a large enough sample size, anything will be statistically significant. You also need to look at statistical power and effect size.

Additionally, test-retest reliability is the best way of telling if an effect truely exists-meaning we find the same results in multiple studies in multiple samples in different places across time.

If it's from a credible source (for instance, gallup uses sample sizes that give them 95% confidence, and higher), and if you know when it was gotten, and how and by whom, is all essential info.

As is the margin of error.

If it's greater than the difference between groups, that essentially says theirs no detectable difference.

It they're old, they may no longer be accurate.

If they were found in a goofy way -- not statistically sound, or neutral questions -- they're questionable.

In general, where you don't have all the info yourself, go by the source. Credible sources will have the backing to make the claims they make.

I would have thought that you'd be able to find confidence levels by doing a bit of digging on a government website though. Most people wouldn't have a clue what they are and what their use is, so maybe it's information that doesn't get published.

Most websites quoting stats wouldn't have that kind of info though, guaranteed. But, if you're quoting from a blog, for example, I'm going to take that with a healthy dose of skepticism anyways.
Reply:Good point, but a little on the academic side. Confidence intervals are a useful guide but the real devil is not usually in this sort of detail. The serious problems are usually far more fundamental e.g. sample bias, file drawer effect etc.

I think we can generally trust research that omits CIs if they have the other important factors present and correct. Someone who draws their sample of 10 participants from their friends but doesn't like the results, so asks 10 other friends until they find the result they wanted, will produce results not to be trusted, even if they produce a 95% CI.

There are formula that give a confidence interval based on the sample size to population size. Frankly the kinds of mathematical methods used in the physical sciences could muddy the waters much more than they clarify them. You cannot scientifically quantify how well someone understands a question. You cannot clearly identify what biases are present within a survey, or how they affect respondents. You cannot neatly designate on the basis of geography or affluence.

Putting a confidence interval to a piece of research implies that you, as a scientist know the uncertainty in the variables you are measuring. That the experiment can be conducted against an accurate control group and repeated with a similar outcome within the parameters of experimental error.

Social sciences deal with surveys which the same respondent may fill in differently depending on whether they are in a good or bad mood.

What this leaves is qualitative and quantitative studies with some value. The bigger the sample size of a quantitative study the more accurate it is likely to be. And a review of the source documentation should provide at least some insight into how "reasonable" a piece of research it is.

This is a terrible site. Why would you want to label these babies bastards. They may very well be born to girls who are quite happy not being married and are still good mothers. I find that word very offensive and archaic. This is the millenium and you do not need a marriage licence to raise happy, healthy children.

That is why they are called private companies. Would you willingly tell your competitors what your sales are and margins? Being private has its distinct advantages. You might try bribing the IRS for the information. It will be on their tax returns. It would be better to do that through a 3rd party so that you can deny knowledge of it should the act come to light. Another source of the information would be an insider in the accounting department or data processing department of the company. A low level employee that would relish having a few hundred extra dollars to spend.

Dumpsters are also a great source of information especially those situated on the premesses of the company in question. Again, using a 3rd party, is the best approach.

But even if they do, their accounting laws are very different from British Common Law countries to the point that you will not find their information very useful.
