You don't give a time frame for your question. The answer is that if you want records from the 20th century, go to the County Clerk for wherever the ancestors were born, married or died.

Before that, it's not a given that they had birth records. Less than 1/2 the population of the Midwest born before 1910 ever had their births registered.

Deaths were registered if they died in a populated area. But the area you're researching was still Plain and Badlands pre-1910. There's no guarantee you'll find death records on many people.

Marriages are very hit-and-miss before 1910. If they were married by a judge or justice of the peace, the person performing the marriage often kept the records and no marriage license was ever filed with the county. If a traveling minister did the ceremony, the odds get even lower.

If you run into any of these obstacles, there are alternative paths to search for records, but let us know more specific info on your research before we tackle that.

Good luck on your research.
Reply:I recently had to get my husbands birth certificate from South Dakota. You can go to their website and get the phone number to call the office. This is the site for South Dakota: http://www.state.sd.us/doh/VitalRec/vita... Here it will tell you how to apply, and everything else you need to know. This is the site for North Dakota: http://www.health.state.nd.us/vital/orde...

Carpe Diem %26amp; good luck!
Reply:Go to the web site of the health department or the office of vital statistics in the county where the birth took place.

You should find ordering instructions there.
Reply:Do as Lisa A. suggests. That is what I do when I need to get some thing like that for genealogy.. I usually punch in example:north Dakota vital statistics . This should lead to a link. Good luck.
