Are statistics really vital :)?

Yes, to a degree. One can manipulate most statistics to achieve the desired results. I think more in the terms of the the theory of probability.

I looked at one of your other questions, earlier. If memory serves me correctly, you received close to ninety answers. So, what is the probability of my answer being chosen as best? Thus, comes variables. Of course, the initial thought is the likelihood would be greater if only four people answered. Now, more variables. Who are you more inclined to agree with or will your decision be based on the most accurate answer or who you may favor, personally. You may choose to give the best answer to someone based on their level, appearance, humor, intellect, etc. You then are in complete control of the outcome.

There are those who claim statistics are of no value and then give a percentage of the randomness. They have then contradicted their own answer. The percentile is a statistical formulation of a variable sort.

There are some statistics or probabilities that are considered extremely vital, such as most mathematical ones. These are more concrete as opposed to statistics concerning something with substantial variables as the upcoming elections. Those are the most commonly manipulated.

You generalized the word statistics. So, the "absolute" best answer has a probability of basically zero. That is using the 0 to 1 scale, if you will, of probability.

ETA: I feel like debating, today!! ;)

***ETA: Democritus, never would I pick on you! I just found this question to be very refreshing. A nice change from the ordinary. You're an intelligent man and you allowed me free reign to expand on a very thought provoking question. Plus, I enjoyed statistics in college. ;)

Beats the hell out of, "What color are your eyes?" LMAO

Are statistics really vital :)?
Now, you're talking about a true scientific approach! Atta boy! LMAO Report Abuse

Reply:Only if it involves how much lager i have left.
Reply:Sometimes they are. Just depends on what statistics you are referring to.
Reply:Heck yes
Reply:First I have to ask what area of statistics are you referring to?

1. Design of Experiments

2. Descriptive Statistics

3. Probability Theory

The list goes on and on. Your question is the same as if one were to ask "How important is blood pressure" in the P%26amp;S section of Yahoo answers

........OR better yet, to quote Monty Python and "The Holy Grail", "What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?"

My point simply is this...why are you asking questions you obviously know the answer to in P%26amp;S?

You are an engineer, are you not? If you are, you've certainly had, as a minimum, coursework in basic statistics, possibly even delving into advanced statistic courses such as random variables, imaginary numbers, frequency distributions or inferential statistics.

Make you a deal, demo....

If you can tell me the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow (African..NOT European) then I'll entertain everyone and answer your question......up for a challenge of wits?
Reply:absolutely

without them life would be just a waist

statistics even make some people feel hip

and its vital to get a breast of statistics to enjoy life
Reply:Suppose it all depends on what sort of stats you are referring to.
Reply:no
Reply:Yes, sometimes they are.
Reply:There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.

Benjamin Disraeli and popularized in the U.S. by Mark Twain
Reply:no because 84% of statistics are made up on the spot.
Reply:No - in fact, 41.6% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
Reply:sometimes
Reply:No. They need to be backed up with some evidence because most statistics are wrong.
Reply:Only the vital statistics,,
