Can you go to the burea of Vital Statistics to change a spelling error in your name on your birth certificate?

Please this is very important. If you lived in New Jersey and had a mistake on your birth certificate, and went to trenton to get it fixed tell me that you did it. can you really go over there to get it changed or do you HAVE to send a letter? I have a spelling error in my name and i need it changed, but it'll take 12 weeks to get my birth certificate the right way. i need it NOW so can I go over there with my parents to get it changed? only answer if you know FOR SURE. Please answer if you, or someone you know, has done it before.

like it or not, the birth certificate is the "Legal" spelling of your name. The only way you can change that is to file for a name change, this may require an attorney to accomplish.
Reply:That sucks. You will need to notify the Social Security Administration, and then call the Bureau of Vital Statistics to find out their proceedure. It differs from state to state, so you may have to get things squared away with SSA before you go to the BVS or vice versa. Call around before you do anything.
