How reliable are 'statistics' when their 'confidence level' is absent?

On the GS forum there is always much dispute about the reliability of statistics cited by pro-feminst sources (pro-feminist websites and wikipaedia) and those from other sources. Even statistics from government and government agencies are questionable. So how trustworthy are the 'statistics' which are presented to us?

I have yet to see here any cited statistics which reveal the 'confidence level' of the statistics presented. Confidence level goes from 0% to 100% and is calculated according to the number of samples, the typicality of the samples and so on. (We were taught an equation for doing all this.)

Should we disregard the statistics which omit this vital information?

How reliable are 'statistics' when their 'confidence level' is absent?
I've never heard of the confidence level indicator (except on opinion polls). Yes, stats should include them.

But could you guarantee those weren't tampered with?
Reply:I doubt seriously that outside of professional journals you will hear about confidence levels, " goodness of fit ", chi squares. T tests, or any other of the boring tools of statistical analysis that I must use constantly and do not ever talk about, except professionally
Reply:"Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics." ""

- Autobiography of Mark Twain
Reply:I think we should use logic and common sense. Some people WANT to believe certain things whether they make sense or not.

Its not about how you feel.. its about how much sense it makes. If it makes sense.. its probably true.. and vica versa
Reply:FYI not all statistics use confidence intervals.

On that note, you can see all the statistics in any scientific article(its a requirement in order to get published). I myself have cited 2 or 3 on this board, they exist you are just not looking for them.
Reply:If the stat was presented in a puff piece, you can just ignore it. If it is presented in a professional journal without a confidence level and a methodology, you can cancel your subscription.
Reply:This question is way too complicated to be answered easily.

Confidence intervals are different than being statistically significant. For example, a person may have an IQ of 100 with a 95% confidence interval of 90-110, meaning that we can say with 95% confidence that his/her score is within that range.

Anything that gets published as "significant" usually will have to be significant at the %26lt; 05. level. However, if we have a large enough sample size, anything will be statistically significant. You also need to look at statistical power and effect size.

Additionally, test-retest reliability is the best way of telling if an effect truely exists-meaning we find the same results in multiple studies in multiple samples in different places across time.
Reply:The fact that the people citing them don't include all the relevant information doesn't make the stats wrong.

If it's from a credible source (for instance, gallup uses sample sizes that give them 95% confidence, and higher), and if you know when it was gotten, and how and by whom, is all essential info.

As is the margin of error.

If it's greater than the difference between groups, that essentially says theirs no detectable difference.

It they're old, they may no longer be accurate.

If they were found in a goofy way -- not statistically sound, or neutral questions -- they're questionable.

In general, where you don't have all the info yourself, go by the source. Credible sources will have the backing to make the claims they make.
Reply:I tend to agree with the above answers.

I would have thought that you'd be able to find confidence levels by doing a bit of digging on a government website though. Most people wouldn't have a clue what they are and what their use is, so maybe it's information that doesn't get published.

Most websites quoting stats wouldn't have that kind of info though, guaranteed. But, if you're quoting from a blog, for example, I'm going to take that with a healthy dose of skepticism anyways.
Reply:Good point, but a little on the academic side. Confidence intervals are a useful guide but the real devil is not usually in this sort of detail. The serious problems are usually far more fundamental e.g. sample bias, file drawer effect etc.

I think we can generally trust research that omits CIs if they have the other important factors present and correct. Someone who draws their sample of 10 participants from their friends but doesn't like the results, so asks 10 other friends until they find the result they wanted, will produce results not to be trusted, even if they produce a 95% CI.
Reply:I concur.
Reply:I don't even know confidence intervals are applicable to a lot of the kinds of research quoted in this forum, and perhaps that is why they aren't quoted.

When a survey is conducted, for example, respondents will often give answers that are based on previous questions, especially if the survey "walks though" a set of questions.

There are formula that give a confidence interval based on the sample size to population size. They are at their most valuable when applied to things like opinion polls, where there is a simple Yes/No ABC type answer, but again there are always issues, such as demographics, socio economic grouping, gender distribution.

In my experience with these things I tend to think "it is what it is" - i.e. generally a survey or a piece of research is better than no research. I will look at the sample size. I will look at the distribution of the sample if that information is available. If I can see the source questionnaire I will look at that too. If I am interested enough.

I also greatly enjoy qualitative research. It has no statistical significance at all usually, but it does illustrate patterns of thinking and behaviour. It is valuable for those reasons.

Frankly the kinds of mathematical methods used in the physical sciences could muddy the waters much more than they clarify them. You cannot scientifically quantify how well someone understands a question. You cannot clearly identify what biases are present within a survey, or how they affect respondents. You cannot neatly designate on the basis of geography or affluence.

Putting a confidence interval to a piece of research implies that you, as a scientist know the uncertainty in the variables you are measuring. That the experiment can be conducted against an accurate control group and repeated with a similar outcome within the parameters of experimental error.

Social sciences deal with surveys which the same respondent may fill in differently depending on whether they are in a good or bad mood.

What this leaves is qualitative and quantitative studies with some value. The bigger the sample size of a quantitative study the more accurate it is likely to be. And a review of the source documentation should provide at least some insight into how "reasonable" a piece of research it is.
Reply:New plan. Every time someone posts statistics, you will be responsible for calculating its confidence level, and then we'll decide whether or not to get rid of it.

What do you think of the fact that in 2005, over 1/2 of births to women aged 20-24 years were to unwed girls?

The CDC Vital Statistics just released this preliminary data for 2005.

http://societyofbastards.org

http://oneminutemarriage.us

What do you think of the fact that in 2005, over 1/2 of births to women aged 20-24 years were to unwed girls?
This is a terrible site. Why would you want to label these babies bastards. They may very well be born to girls who are quite happy not being married and are still good mothers. I find that word very offensive and archaic. This is the millenium and you do not need a marriage licence to raise happy, healthy children.
Reply:Nothing is wrong with unwed mothers, as for the fathers they are immature, irresponsible at that age. They want to have fun but not own up to the responsibility, little boys is what I call them.
Reply:It is another sign of the decline of traditional family values. I also do not believe it can be reversed....our young people are so programmed by the liberal thinking of our public education systems so as to challenge what has always been considered "right" and "wrong." No shame, no remorse, no humility....you have the right to......whatever you want.

So even the good logic of the need for the balance of female and male parental influence for children and the positive community influences like churches is met with the "brain-trained" attitude, "It's MY life and I will do what I want."

This way, the homosexual %26amp; feminist agenda can have a wide open gate through which to further their agenda.

And if anyone thinks baby-killing (abortions) is about anything but big profits for a very very big industry (and NOT about providing what is best for you) you are living in a dreamland. Those babies are worth a LOT of money dead - their parts are sold for research and the clinic owners are rolling in blood money....all the way to hell.
Reply:Do they have the statistics on how many of those unwed women still have the baby's father(or a man that is willing to be the childs father by deed) in their lives? Or how many of those women are providing very well for their children despite not being married? How many of those women are scraping by, and should never have brought a child into this world? How many of those unwed women put their babies up for adoption? How many used the baby as a "trap" for a man? There is more to the "unwed mother" issue than her just being unwed. I say if the woman is willing and able, there is no need for me to worry. If the woman isn't able, then there is cause for alarm(being married in no way makes a woman more able to raise a child than one who isn't married). "Unwed mother" doesn't equal "unfit mother"
Reply:Truly sad. I give credit to the changing society of permissiveness. It is no longer a stigma. When a higher authority and parental guidance are no longer in the equation. Mom is in the work place and no longer at home. The sexual revolution. These are just a few of the things that have lead to this.

It truly saddens me.God help the next generation
Reply:Just one of the many marvelous legacies of Great Society liberalism, feminism, and the evisceration of the constitution by opportunistic whore politicians.

Oh, and the fathers are probably out knocking up other irresponsible sluts. Or maybe just sponging off one of them, but not marrying her because it would kill a lot of her government handouts.
Reply:Hey, everyone could use a tax right off; and house prices are just ridiculous these days.
Reply:At least these unwed mothers are older, hopefully more mature and better financially able to care for children then unwed teen mothers. Personally, if every mother out there waited for marriage to have children, there would be a lot less children in the world, because right now there is definitely a shortage of qualified fathers, and being a sperm donor whether it be in person or through a tube, is the same a "sperm donor". Statistics are just that statistics and don't take into consideration "life lessons". There is such a quickness to categorize.
Reply:I, personally, will take unwed woman of 20-24 getting pregnant than girls 12-17 any day. I don't think things are like there were back in the 50s and 60s when it was completely looked down upon. True sometimes that's not a great thing but look at how much the typical family has changed. I don't have an opinion as to rather they should be married or not. That's a personal choice and sometimes its the best to not get married. As long as they mother and child is happy, healthy, and well taken care of, more power to them.
Reply:Just because these women are unmarried, it does not mean they are all single mothers either. I think someone is jumping to conclusions. HTH.
Reply:Welcome to the 21st century
Reply:I'd like to know where the parents are. Doesn't anybody teach their kids about safe sex anymore? Does it LOOK like abstinence based programs really work?
Reply:It is a shame to the human race.

That's not to add to or even mention all of the babies that are destroyed to unwed mothers by way of abortion.

Showing the statistics in the age groups of abortions performed,.

I believe the results would be different if the abortions were included.

Those were still babies, they just were not allow to live.

Still, a children needs to be raised in a family type atmosphere with a woman as a mother figure and a man as a father figure.

When it is just a single parent the child always suffers.

I know there's divorce and the other factors involved at time But, It is intended for a child the to be raise with a Father and Mother together.

Not going religious here.

In our society today God is being eliminated from basically everything.

The bible says; the nation that forgets God shall be turned into Hell. That is what our nation is coming to so it seems
Reply:What everyone else has said is sufficient, but I want to point out to the idiot who said that it doesn't matter to us that we PAY for those children. Some woman that lives down in New Orleans who has ten kids with ten different 'fathers' who gets like $4000 a month from the government- guess who pays for that? I do! You do too! So it IS our concern! This is OUR nation, and WE are concerned for its welfare. Enough of spitting out overused sayings that don't have meaning in context- Enough ignorance.
Reply:who cares...care about yourself...why do people care so much about all that stuff as long as they dont do it themselves..like abortion for example.. its that womens right to do whatever they want to theri body and i dont think someone else should tell them what to do
Reply:It is basically child abuse. 70% of the prison population came from families without a father.

One wonders how it was that these statistics came to be so high over the last 30 years, coincidentally parallel to the women's movement.

However, feminists on here disavow any blame feminism has for this, despite promotion of irresponsible sex for women, child support, maternal custody and child support.

Basically their line on this is that we need to crack down on men more and make them "more responsible", despite the fact that men already have all reproductive responsibility and women have none.

It is the creation of a matrilineal society, which is unsurprisingly what the radfems wanted all along. It is already having disastrous effects.
Reply:Well only because people stop marrying they do not stop loving and getting pregnant, so yeah I have no big issue with it. Also i believe your numbers are for the us, right ? I would be surprised if Italy had numbers which would be anywhere close to that.
Reply:"Girls" ends at 18. You are talking about women aged 20-24. I don't know about the reliability of your "sources"...they look pretty damn dodgy to me...
Reply:I was one of those 'girls' and the father is actually in the living room. Marriage is not on the top of our priority list right now. Our son is.
Reply:I believe the correct term is women. And so what. Sounds right on track for this country.
Reply:I'd rather see an 20-24 year old unwed female have a child than a 14-18 year old. At least the 20-24 year olds are more mature and can handle having a child.

Cousin's death ruled suspicious how can I get copy of death certificate if I'm no timmediate family?

I tried vital statistics department in my state and they stated that they could not release it to me. Myself and my mother are my cousin's only living blood relatives. My cousin's spouse is living, however we think that, that person is the reason the cause of death was ruled suspicious. The death was in 1999 and was caused by a firearm.

I would go to the police dept and talk to them.
Reply:Go to who ever you're supposed to and tell them that you are their only living relatives and hopefully someone will have some sympathy for you, or since you're the only living family member, they would have to give it to you (I would think). Or consult with a lawyer. Good luck.

What county is the city Palo Alto located in CA?

I need the address of vital statistics (for a birth certifcate) in that county

What county is the city Palo Alto located in CA?
Most people think that Palo Alto is in San Mateo County, but it is actually in Santa Clara County. Palo Alto is located within Santa Clara County and borders San Mateo County

There are 15 cities in Santa Clara County including Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Mountain View, Palo Alto, San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale ranging from Palo Alto to the north, to Gilroy in the south.

Is there a polite way to inquire whether a prospective (girl) date is routinely orgasmic during intercourse?

This is of interest as I've just ventured into on-line dating world and so many of the responses are at awkward distances.

It is not something I would normally inquire about in an e-mail nor a pre-meeting phone call but, I'd hate to accumulate or use frequent flyer mileage without knowing that vital statistic.

Steer the discussion around to a Cosmo' survey which states that only 48% (or whatever) of women are so blessed.

Her response will be telling.

Hard to find revenue information for private companies?

I can not seem to find information on any of my competitors. They are not located in the USA, and I was only able to find one company on Hoovers (Japanese company), I can not justify the cost of a Hoovers report.

Common sites that will not work for me are:

http://finance.google.com/

http://hoovers.com/

http://money.cnn.com/

http://www.idexec.com/

http://www.zapdata.com/

http://www.onesource.com/

I need strategies for obtaining this information, preferably without cost. How did you find vital statistics on your competition? Are there any strategies that might help? Should I ask their CEO to give me this information, will it work?

Hard to find revenue information for private companies?
That is why they are called private companies. Would you willingly tell your competitors what your sales are and margins? Being private has its distinct advantages. You might try bribing the IRS for the information. It will be on their tax returns. It would be better to do that through a 3rd party so that you can deny knowledge of it should the act come to light. Another source of the information would be an insider in the accounting department or data processing department of the company. A low level employee that would relish having a few hundred extra dollars to spend.

Dumpsters are also a great source of information especially those situated on the premesses of the company in question. Again, using a 3rd party, is the best approach.
Reply:the best way to get info about your private competition is the market and the customers. your customers are most probably your competition customers too. get close to your customers and try to squeeze out from them as much infor as u could
Reply:http://www.manta.com

Revenue information on U.S. companies is free, and international company reports are very affordable.

Give it a try...
Reply:usually i just go to their website and download their annual report.
Reply:In the US, private companies are not required to make their financial information public. There is absolutely no advantage for them to provide this information without being required -- so you are out of luck.

Countries that take their legal systems from British Common law are likely to have the same rules regarding reporting information. Other countries may or may not have laws about reporting financial information. But even if they do, their accounting laws are very different from British Common Law countries to the point that you will not find their information very useful.

Your only solice is that they can't find informtion on you -- unless you ar giving it to them (or are public).

How would someone find info on ancestors that came to the U.S. from Poland?

Is there anywhere to research ancestors that were born in poland to see what part of poland they came from or any info related to vital statistics, etc?

How would someone find info on ancestors that came to the U.S. from Poland?
you're going to have to do some old fashioned research first most likely, find your ancestors death certificate, that might have where they were born. find their naturalization papers, that is the best bet.

you can try hit or miss searching on ellisisland and other immigration web sites, but when handwritten polish names are indexed into databases like ellisisland, it usually doesn't match, cause the old handwritting is very difficult to read.

once you find their home village in poland, then you can look it up at familysearch.org to see if the mormons have copied the church records of that village.
Reply:try this im noy sure but i think there is a website called ancestores.com try googling it first though
Reply:You would really have to indicate a time period to know which resources might be available. Even where someone is from is time dependent upon history. Far enough back you could try http://ellisisland.org/ or http://castlegarden.org/
Reply:Another site to try is rootsweb.com. Lots of info there.
Reply:google your last name
Reply:Try searching for a specific ancestor (or, if you have none, your last name) at the Ellis Island Immigrant Archives (http://www.ellisislandimmigrants.org/ell...

Ellis Island was the primary point of entry for millions of European immigrants to the United States. If you find your ancestor, you'll likely be able to find on which ship they arrived, from where that ship sailed, and their given hometown information.

In addition, try this: An online information guide for Genealogy research and Poland (http://www.polishroots.org/genpoland/)

Best of luck!

Reply:I tracked down 180 people for a high school reunion. There is nothing free about finding people who have been out of touch for more than 5 years. You can fool yourself into thinking it's all on the internet at some site somewhere that doesn't cost. But that isn't true.

If the person you're searching for has changed her name, moved out of state, or simply chosen to be anonymous in this world, the internet is not the place to look. I would personally suggest you start with classmates.com to see if she registered there...or if there are any of her old friends from HS who are on there who might have a clue where she is today. Short of that, you need to spend money, make phone calls, do leg work, and invest a great amount of time.

On a personal level, I find it sad that something can be so important to people, but spending the $20 to find the answer is unthinkable.

What do you think of the fact that in 2005, 4 out of 5 births to teens were non-marital?

The CDC Vital Statistics of the Federal Government just released the preliminary results.

http://societyofbastards.org

http://oneminutemarriage.us

What do you think of the fact that in 2005, 4 out of 5 births to teens were non-marital?
Teens often accidentally get pregnant, but have you ever heard of a teen "accidentally" getting married? Of course not, because you can't accidentally get married, but it is all too easy to accidentally become pregnant. That's why there are so many unmarried teen parents.
Reply:Most teens dont mean to get pregnant. The ones who have a baby are the once who have the family there to help them out. Im sure that it is/was very hard on them, but to get married at 15/16 or even 17 will be even more hard. What if the father of the baby wants nothing to do with the child? Someone who is that young should not get married because most of the time it will not work out. They have a hard enough time trying to raise a baby and go to school. Besides in the world today you dont need to be married before you have a child. You dont even have to get married after the child is born. Alot of people out there have been with there partner for years and years, and have a family together, but are not married. There is nothing wrong with that.
Reply:check your stats -- the ones i have read suggest that teen pregnancies are fathered NOT by teenaged boys -- but by men 25 years plus.

Looks like our adult men need a lesson in morals and not our teenagers.
Reply:i think its a sad commentary on the morality of todays youth. errr lack of.
Reply:naturally there teens .i have 4 children to the same man im 27 i had my first when i was just 16 we are still very happy not everyone finds that thou its just the way the world works
Reply:Why is it that everybody thinks you should be married to have children? I have been with my fiance' for 5 years now and have a 14 month old son. We are planning on getting married, but it is not first priority. People always ask why we aren't married, and it is so irritating. Sometimes it is better if the parents aren't together.
Reply:This is so irritating to me, just because they are not married does that make them any less of parents. I know some girls that are single teen-aged mom's and I think they are doing better than some of the older married women. I don't believe two people should get married because there is a child involved. two people should get married because they love each other and WANT to get married. I myself have a 14 month old baby boy and I have been with his father for over 5 years and we are engaged to be married but we want to do it when we are ready not when other people think we are ready. Does that make me any less of a mother, my son has clothes on his back, food in his belly, and if you ask me is the happiest little boy I have ever met. We will be married in May ( upon our choosing ) but because we are getting married does that mean that it will affect the way we are raising our child?? NO it won't, he will still be the same happy natured baby boy that he has always been. I hate it when people judge other young mothers because they are not married. But if you also check out the statistics of divorces between people there is a higher rate of those now isn't there?? Just because a couple has a baby with or without being married doesn't mean that they are bad parents or bad people. We will raise our son how we see fit. My fiancee' comes from a very good family, very well rounded and traditional on some things, but his mom and dad got divorced and my parents are divorced so that is why we don't see a huge deal in getting married right away, we both love each other with all of our hearts and will be here for each other no matter what we just don't need a piece of paper to tell us that we love each other.

I really wish people wouldn't focus so much on the negativity and focus on positive things. People are so quick to point out an unwed teen-aged mother but don't speak about how good of a job she is doing and what she is doing to provide for her baby. goodness I think people are too quick to judge. I hate the looks I got when I was pregnant from some people because when I don't have make-up on I look really young and it made me so mad, I actually had a women come up to me and my fiancee' once and tell us that we had no business having a child because it was quite apparent that we weren't ready for a child, meanwhile we were both dressed really nicely, my son was dressed nicely and she knew nothing about us but just took a look at us and immediately judged us based on all the negativity around teen-aged mothers. it is quite sad actually the way society is now a days. but i guess that is life. all i know is that we are doing well and my son has everything that he needs so that to me is all that matters not what a stranger on the streets thinks.

To the guy below me:: I do NOT think I threw my life away, my son is my WORLD he means everything to me and if I could go back in time and change things I WOULDN'T. My son means way more to me than going out and partying and getting drunk. I am still going to school and I am still doing the other things I want to do so by now means have I ruined my life. Granted I am not a teen-ager anymore I am 21 years old but I still wouldn't take back having my son he is the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Reply:I am not surprised!
Reply:I think it's disturbing. But not being married does not mean that you are not in a commited relationship with the other parent. Marriage is taking on a whole new image and many people are deciding not to travel that road. I would also be curious about other age groups having children while not married.
Reply:I blame society for this because everywhere you go and see on tv are images of sexuality. Sex has become so casual that most teenagers think its normal to sleep everyother guy that comes their way. When you try to shelter your kids from this people call you old fashioned. I call it LOVE for my children!!!!!!
Reply:I think the sadder part is that there are teens throwing away their youth over procreation. You must live a very boring life to want to do that. Thats what your mid-20 to mid-30s are for.....procreation. Enjoy your youth it only comes once!!!! Why do people want to grow up so fast.....do you live in a farm or third-world country?
Reply:Since you cannot marry until 18 then many of the statistical years (13-17) are misrepresented. 33 out of 47 (18-19 year olds) are married however, and many of the younger ones are engaged to be married.

My Brother was born in Kennett,mo.Need birth certificate. Thanks?

I have tried the vital statistics in Jefferson City but got nowhere. Is there another place to contact?

My Brother was born in Kennett,mo.Need birth certificate. Thanks?
I lost mine recently and had to contact the county in the city in which I was born. If the city has a website, go on their and search for "birth certificate" and you should be good to go. Or you can contact the county clerk for more information. Hopefully, this helps you out. Good luck!
Reply:siblings are not legally entitled to a birth certificate. The person named OR the parents are.
Reply:The important question hasn't been asked. But when was he born? Pre-1930 he might not have a birth certificate. Otherwise, you need to follow Fae's advice. There are good alternatives to the State. Many times there are records kept by the counties that aren't sent to the State until it's archiving time.
Reply:Contact the rectory of the church or contact the Pastors of several Churches and have them search the Church records for marriage, death, birth, baptism certification. Jefferson City is the Capital of Missouri. You need to contact the County of his birth--which would be Dunklin county, it's population is only like 12000 so they County Records should be easy to search and the Pastors of the various denominations at the Churches in Kennett city would be few as well. Good luck--Go to the "County Records"
Reply:Have you tried the Cole County Health Department? See

http://www.colehealth.org/birthdeathcert...

I'm not sure whether you can have a copy or not -- The application form reads "Must be registrant, member of immediate family, legal guardian, or legal representative."

A sister might be considered "immediate family" but you would need to check with them.

PS The Cole County Health Department has birth records from 1910 to the present.

Why does it take Social Security Adminstration 3 months to issue a replacement Social Security card?

I applied for a social security card almost 3 mos. ago, there was a discrepancy about my birthdate and they wanted to see my birth certificate I ordered an original state sealed birth certificate overnighted to me for $30.00 (thinking this would expediate the matter) went back to social security adminstration the same week in December had supporting documents of my birthdate; life ins. policy, high school transcript, baptismal record,I.R.S documents, then they told me they wanted to verify the birth certificate with vital statistics. I had to contact a liason before SS would notify me in February why I had not recevied my card, they finally sent me correspondence last week(through a liason) that they were running behind, would check into this situation and notify me. Running behind? Now how many people need a replacment card at one time? It is sad when administration is too busy to pick up the telephone and make a simple phone call to troubleshoot an urgent situation. Truly sad.

Why does it take Social Security Adminstration 3 months to issue a replacement Social Security card?
Damn! Ususally it is two weeks. I would go to the office again. Now that you have proven your identity, there is usually a paper they issue that shows your ss number on it. You should be able to use it in lieu of your card until you recieve the actual card. Most employers etc will accept it as it is from the SS dept. Once you get your card, you can show it to your employer, etc.

Are town halls typically open on weekends?

I'm in Waterbury, CT and the Vital Statistics says 8 to 4:30, but not Monday through Friday, so is it open all days?

Are town halls typically open on weekends?
Not likely.
Reply:Most town halls are not open on weekends. If your townhall has a website check it out for the hours and/or the information you are looking for.
Reply:The times stated are the times the official offices are open. Meeting are usually held in the evening, but can be scheduled anytime. Call you city hall in Waterbury and ask the City Clerk. You may want to request also that you be notified of all scheduled meetings and public hearing being held in the City Hall so you can attend!!!! You will need to write a letter to the City Clerk to make this request official.

The City Clerk will be able to provide you with all this information, including a complete list of office hours and meeting times. WRITE YOUR CITY CLERK TODAY!!!!!!!
Reply:No. You'd better use the internet if you need info

How do i find record of my grandmother's birth- i know the city andyear?

I'm new to this, my mother was adopted and is 85, recently they have opened birth certificates of natural parents . I'm looking for any info on them. Grandmother - Dora Scheffenboro, born in Missoula, Mt 1898 or 1899. My mother's name was Jane Willis, and she was born on mar 21, 1922 in Portland, Oregon at city hos[ital. She had two older siblings- names unkown. My grandfather's name was Henry Willis, born in 1883 or1884 in Chico, Ca (possibly Chino) and he died before my mother was born , between july 1921 and mar 1922. I'm having a hard time getting online info from bureau of vital statistics. The only document I have is my mother's original b-certificate. Any free help out there? Thanks

How do i find record of my grandmother's birth- i know the city andyear?
Hey Little Onion,

You need to get the vital records that you can. Death certificates, obituaries, birth certificates, census records, wills, probate, etc. Vital records can be obtained first at the City/Town records. That will be cheapest. Go to the library for obits, and read some of the materials I am attaching (web sites).

Also, you should pursue the Family Search site for each of those names. GENFORUM for each Surname, and web searches for all FAMILY %26lt;NAME%26gt; .

Your question is a big one, so, I did not get specific. You have a lot of work ahead of you. Good luck. Feel free to get specific.
Reply:Call Adrienne Wojtowictz out of Whichita KAnsas. she found both my parents for me. for real cheap. she is awesome. call information and get her number or google her name.
Reply:GO TO OREGON.GOV
Reply:Go to people data .com Or people find .com if you have that much information then it should be no problem finding her. Or just start writing people down there and see who response to you. I'm sure there is someone who can tell you something back in her home town. Usually people don't move away and someone could have some information for you. GOOD LUCK....
Reply:look for the surrogate records of the county she passed away in

Follow-up question for my previous question about getting my son's birth certificate?

I asked a question a little earlier about getting my son's birth certificate so I can enroll him in kindergarten, and I did end up doing a Google search for the city he was born in and vital statistics, and filled out all the info, gave credit card info (it's about 37 dollars by the way... people said somewhere between 10 and 50 dollars), and anyway, all I have to do is provide identification and sign, date and fax the identification verification form.

So, I have a dumb follow-up question: do I need to be sending id for myself (the applicant, mother of a minor child) or for my son (the five-year-old)? The only id I have for him is a social security card.

Told ya, dumb question, but they don't specify.

Follow-up question for my previous question about getting my son's birth certificate?
I'd make a copy of both....that way you don't have anymore hassles and it will be taken care of.
Reply:You'll want to send your identification. They'll match the name on your ID against the mother's name on the birth certificate for your son, then send it to you.
Reply:you should go to the court house, with the S.S.N. you should

not half to pay..
Reply:When i got my son birth certificate i showed them my ID but i went and got his not through the internet. I would look and see if there's a number on there so you can call and ask them that question.

.
Reply:Don't they have a telephone helpline or email? click control+F and then find "contact".

You need for yourself in most cases (perhaps the father too, depending), especially if you're talking about a child who's too young to have much other ID.

When I did it, I didn't give credit card info, I mailed a check with my signature that I was entitled to the information. (30 dollars) But I guess it depends on the state.

If it's in the US, the website should end in .gov. If it doesn't, there may be a slight problem.

I would like to do a geneology chart dating back 10 generations.?

I've written to a company that does geneology research and was advised that, to do the chart would cost thousands of $'s. I have no objection to doing the research myself but don't know how to go about it. Can I search online for vital statistics records or do I have to visit every location that maintains the records? Any advice on how best to proceed would be most appreciated!

I would like to do a geneology chart dating back 10 generations.?
If you are interested in doing your genealogy, the best way to get started is to start with yourself. Write down everything you know about your parents, then keep going back until you run stuck. Most people can get back to their grandparents and maybe a set of great grandparents. At this point there are so many ways to get back further in your tree. Much of it depends on the records available. For instance, it you live in the United States, public records are only going to take you back so far. Many localities weren't required to keep records until the late 1800's or even early 1900's, and many courthouses were burned in the Civil War destroying many of the existing records that were already in place. In Europe and many other countries, records go back a lot further. Other avenues of getting information are studying old land records, wills, cemeteries, city directories, local histories and military records. Another gold mine of information is if your parents kept old letters of the family. It wasn't uncommon in the early twentieth century for women to have post card books. Some old post cards have some interesting information as well. If you are young, you may have the honor of being able to interview your grandparents for information. If you do this, I would recommend taping the conversation because often it is impossible to remember everything they said and you will have a treasure for future generations. Even though tracing your tree yourself takes a lot of time and a lot of effort, you learn so much and it is so much more worthwhile than pulling up a tree on a website and wondering where in the world the author got their information.

I am assuming your family is in the U.S. If it isn't then disregard my answer.

First, ancestry.com does have a 14 day free trial-BUT you must cancel before the end of 14 days or they will charge your credit card. Also, don't be suprised if they ask you to put your cancellation in writing and fax it to them. I have had friends tell me that they had to do it this way to cancel. I personally have found the information at Ancestry.com very helpful. A few years ago, I had a 14 day trial and didn't find them to be worth the money, but over the last couple of years they have added so much. They have all years of the census fully indexed, immigration records, military records, newspapers, family trees and the list goes on. They have truly evolved the last couple of years and they keep adding more information.

Here is a list of some of the free genealogy websites.

www.rootsweb.com -This is a good one that is free. It is run by Ancestry.com but shouldn't be confused with Ancestry.com- the pay site.

www.cyndislist.com

www.familysearch.org website for the Church of the Later Day Saints.

www.genforum.com This is a site that is full of individual message boards. You can search and post by last name, state, country, or county. This is a great one. Simply post your question on the respective board, and when people answer you will get a notification on your E-mail. I have had a LOT of success on GenForum.

I must say, however, that a good genealogy query, doesn't just say. " I need information on John Smith" Try to provide as many dates, places, and details as possible. One little thing can make the difference as to the answer you get.

a good query has

1) the persons name

2) all of the biographical information you know to date and

3) asks a specific question

The reason it is so specific is because people won't waste your time and theirs telling you what you already know. Also, by providing ALL of your known information (for example, the childrens names) it gives people alternate people to research to help arrive at your answer.

http://www.usgenweb.org/ -When you get to the main page, you can get to the state and individual locality pages by clicking on the appropriate links. Keep in mind that some towns are going to have more information than some smaller obscure towns. It all depends on what kinds of volunteers contribute information to their sites. Genealogy is very much a hobby that depends on people.

Check your LOCAL LIBRARY. Many libraries have subscriptions to Ancestry.com or hertiage quest that you can Access from home with your library card number. Heritage Quest is geared mostly toward the US records.

www.interment.net or www.findagrave.com These are cemetery sites that have grown by leaps and bounds.

http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-b...

This is the link to the Social Security Death index. This is a very helpful resource to finding death dates of people who died in recent years (since about the 60's)

If your family immigrated to the US in the last 100-125 years you can try

www.ellisisland.org

This one is cool because you can actually have a look at the ships manifests!!

If you start your search for your ancestry, it will probably turn into an obsession. It is very addicting and it is like a big puzzle with so many benefits. You learn where your family came from, where they've been, often you can learn about family medical history. There just isn't a down side. Remember the old addage, "If you want something done right, you often have to do it your self." You are not going to just find your entire genealogy in one search. It is an ongoing puzzle. I tell people, if you can find one thing every time you are searching, you are doing GREAT. If you find any more than that at any given time you are LUCKY!! Write to me if you have any questions. I would be happy to help if I can. Blessings.
Reply:As you can see from the answers you got, genealogists love to help newcomers to the field. Your county may have a genealogical society. If it does, it will be full of sharp old ladies who would be thrilled to give you advice. (Sharp as in experienced and intelligent, not rude.) Look in the phone book or ask your local librarian.
Reply:Hey Wiser With Age,

First, all the fellow answerers above did a great job. What makes you say 10 generations? Sounds like a Genealogist waiting to make money off your family.

My advice, get some software first. Ted likes Rootsmagic, I never tried it, I use Family Tree Maker. You get free time on the Pay sites and can download Family Tree branches that match your initial inputs. Helpful starter information.

Do as they said above, get your living relatives information. Collect all the Birth, Marriage and Death certificate copies you can. Those prove everything that links one generation to the next.

As you progress down a branch, take time to learn about your ancestor. They are not just a name on a branch, but coursing in your veins! Appreciate the lives they lived if you can, get stories about them. Pictures are helpful. The software will help organize this information.

You can always come here for more advice, you can see you will get a ton of advice. Normally, when this many people answer a question, I don't bother. But I like to assure that you start with yourself, immediate family (parents), then up each branch with their parents first. Get what you know.

You should study what is and is not acceptable practice for proof of a link also. Vital records, included sites below, are the backbone of genealogy. You can SEARCH for sites that have these records in municipalities through out the world from your internet keyboard. Just use YAHOO, and put "VITAL RECORD %26lt;location%26gt;", where location is a County, City, or State. Then you follow the process they describe to get your Birth, Marriage or Death records. Anyway, welcome to the world of GENEALOGY.

Oh, last are some sites for Certified Genealogists. Just so you can see what it takes.
Reply:After researching over 20 yrs, I have never paid anyone to do work for me. The fun and challenge is in finding it for yourself, trust me. That does not mean you should not pay someone for a specific thing, if it would actually save you.

Records from this century GENERALLY are less available than older ones, for privacy reasons. Many of those are ones your own family may already have... marriage certificates, birth records, family photos, old letters, etc.

One of the widest volunteer networks is the us genweb, with sites in every county. There also are mailing lists which I find easier. There is NO RULE as to what records you will find online. Every family line or ancestor is unique in where he/she came from. You learn each step of the way. One rule for best results is to learn what good documentation means, and rely on that. Not everything online is reliable, including other's research.

Rootsweb.com is also very valuable. There are mailing lists for both surnames and localities. which focus the efforts.

Stop by www.cyndislist.com, which is one of the oldest collections for resources, including beginner how-to's. Browse through the different types of websites. Actaully, the estimate given is not out of line, when considering the time involved. But you would miss out on a lot of satisfaction.
Reply:A good place to start are the geneological records kept by the Mormons. I have an aunt who is big on geneology, and she goes out to Salt Lake City every year. But some of their records are also on the web. She's found out all kinds of things--they have pay records of all individuals at least as far back as the Revolutionary War. She was able to trace one ancestor and where he was stationed throughout the war, check on who was listed in every census, you name it.
Reply:Start with a chart for the people you know. Use census records to show where they were born and died; going backwards.

Ancestory .com can probably help you; but dedicated searchers assume they will have to visit a few courthouses to work thru some of the questions.
Reply:I know a friend who is doing the same exact thing. It takes lots of work and patience but is doable. Good places to start is asking your family who are or where your family members. Get their full name. Also, get the realionship. That is how are they related. Is it by marriage. Waas the personadopted. Where they live, where they come from etc etc. Once you have all this information then you will star contacting peoplefrom the towns the person you are looking for came from. God places to look are church records. Most people marry by the church and get babtised in a certain church. the church keeps records of this for some reason. You can also go to that towns library and they might have records of who and to whom a person was borned or married to.

This will give you a head start.
Reply:I applaud you for wanting to take on such a large project. The problem with answering your main questions is that the best we can answer is "it depends".

I started my first research in high school in the 70s and never got much help from the people who had the answers I needed. There are TO THIS DAY a few lines where I am barely scratching the surface and can't take them back past my great grandfather in one line and great-great grandmother in another line. The reason is that they got on a boat in Europe and travelled to America and that's as far as I can track them from this side of the pond. Belgium is horrible to research and eastern Poland is just starting to organize their records and make them available to Americans.

So the first "it depends" is that it depends on how long your family has been in America. The year of arrival is intimately tied to how good the records will be that the US kept at the time of their arrival. Before 1830, the US didn't even mandate that a ship's captain provide a passenger list to the port of arrival. And it wasn't until 1900 that they mandated that the port of arrival actually KEEP the passenger list or that it even be complete. So the quality of the information available from those records is really inconsistent and much of it isn't accessible or even still in existence. For the two main points of arrival, Ellis Island (appx 1890-1924) and Castle Clinton (1830-1920) the records are being brought online. Ellis Island has theirs completely typed in. The Battery Conservancy (which is doing coordinating the Castle Clinton project for the Port of New York) is still far from done. They have the unfortunate challenge of making it through the Potato famine years. You can find the majority of arrivals to the US at http://www.ellisisland.org and http://www.castlerock.org

Hand-in-hand with that is that not every immigrant to the US came via ship. Strangely, anyone could WALK into the US from Mexico or Canada without any documentation until just about 100 years ago. No passports, no visas, no documentation of any kind was needed for anyone crossing that way. So if your immigrant ancestor came first to Canada, then decided to settle in the US later, they simply crossed over, found a piece of land and resettled without the US even caring that they were here or Canada really caring that they had left.

Moving on from there, the next favorite set of records for genealogists is census records...and not just the decennial census records carried out by the US government, but also the state census records that many states carried out in the middle of every decade. These are available from many places. People have mentioned Ancestry.com (which is a fine site, just a little expensive if you buy your own membership), but the very best place to search them is a large public or private library (the Newberry Library in Chicago has THE most phenomenal genealogy research center in the country...the room is larger than most libraries are in total size). If you have a good library in your area, then the odds are good that they have either a public-use membership to Ancestry or to a service called Heritage Quest. Both are excellent and using them for free at a library is a great way to save money. With this route, you get to not only look up the records online, but also to use the reference books available at the library which should never be overlooked. For instance, if you have German or Polish ancestors, there is a large set of books called "Germans to America" that you'll need to use. Any good library will have a set. If you have Dutch ancestors, then you need a book called "Dutch to America" which is better than any American passenger lists...they took the port records from the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam and organized them. The beauty of it is that those ports kept wonderful records and you can even find a person's hometown here....at a time that America didn't care what town a person came from back in Europe.

I'm sure you've figured out that birth, marriage and death records are our bread and butter. The next "it depends" is that the availability of these records depends on where your family lived and when. Before 1870, most states didn't require towns or counties track ANY of this. After 1868 you'll start finding towns and counties organizing death and marriage records, but births weren't required to be registered until 1930 in most states. People born into lower economic classes or living in very remote rural areas will rarely have a birth certificate. But don't fret because there is a much better source of info from that era...if your ancestors were church-going people. If your ancestors were married in a church, then the pastor marrying them would keep them in a register. If the minister or priest baptized their babies, then there's a register at the church. If the minister buried your ancestors, then the church has the records. Getting church records may take a little time, but (especially if your ancestors were Catholic, Episcopalian/Anglican, Lutheran or Methodist) these are extremely well-maintained and well-documented records...and they're free. I always request a mass in honor of a loved one if the church does a lot of research for me. Everyone wins that way. The caveat is that you can't look at the books yourself and you have to remember that most of the people working in these offices are very overworked and underpaid. So you have to be very specific in your requests..."I would appreciate a copy of the marriage record of _______ and _______ from June, 1850 and the baptismal records of their children (names/dates). Enclosed is my check for $20 to cover your expenses and to request a mass in their honor on the next available anniversary of their marriage. Thank you"

If you just ask "I'd like all records on the Smith family in your books", you're likely to get your letter back with a request for specific information and specific names.

The best part of getting used to searching through church records is that you can use this same method to research in Europe. Many of the european church records (even Catholic) are filmed by the Mormons and available in the US for under $5 per film. If you realize how many generations will be documented in that one film, it's a real bargain.

Once you get all of your immigrant ancestors identified, you may want to plan a trip for a day or two to the National Archives and Records Administration regional center for the area where your ancestors settled. These sites have records that are usually not online, and only available in full for free if you go there. For instance, they have all of the Declarations of Intent and Naturalization petitions for our immigrant ancestors. Before 1906, these records don't have much information. But for those arriving after 1900, these are the records that will give you parents' names, hometowns, religion, ship and date of arrival, ship and date they left Europe, all relatives living in the US, etc. NARA also maintains all military service records at their facility in St Louis MO. You can write to them for the records if you had ancestors who EVER served in the military in the US. They'll send you everything from the military service record. They also maintain all government service records if you had ancestors who worked for the federal government, served in Congress or as a judge, etc. Those are also maintained in St Louis.

The final set of records that you'll get used to consulting are land records. These aren't always online, or if they are it's only back to the 1950s at the earliest. No county has the money to pay transcriptionists to copy land records back to 1700. These might be the only records where you'll have to make the trip yourself. But even then, call ahead and see if a clerk will copy it for you and fax it to you or read it to you over the phone. I've had that happen many times and it saves me a trip because the information wasn't pertinent to the person I thought it was. The same is true if you're looking for birth/marriage/death (BMD) records, as the county is the only place that maintains them and there might be 5 people with the same name. Call ahead and get the info read to you and make sure it's the person you're actually researching before you pay for a copy of the record or make a trek out there to see it for yourself.

If you need any help with records from a particular place, visit the USGenWeb site for that county. You'll find many dedicated volunteers who will go do the lookup for you and only charge you for actual costs. It's a great way to get a good researcher to do the legwork for you. If you need anything from SE Michigan, I'd be glad to help myself.

Anyway, there's more to it than this...but if this is the beginning of your journey, I'll start here and let you know that you can email at any time if you need help or direction. Good luck to you...you can do 10 generations in about a year if the records are there for you. Who knows, maybe your ancestors were kind enough to never migrate and all of your records are at your state archives in one nice neat package. Happy hunting!

Any suggestions on a web site to access accurate public records?

I'm looking for a good trustworthy web site to look up vital statistics (marriage, birth...) and other records.

Any suggestions on a web site to access accurate public records?
Make sure it is an official website, it will probably end in .gov something
Reply:Are you wanting to do like family tree stuff? My mom loves ancestry.com if that's what you want. I think she pays around $29.95 a year for access to vital records. Also if you're thinking local, don't forget your local library. I know ours has cemetary listings, and access to genelogical books.

What do female measurements actually measure?

For example, I notice that models often will show three numbers, their so-called "vital statistics". What is each number a measurement of, and in what units?

For example:

34/25/35

What do female measurements actually measure?
Bust

Waist

Hips

I've usually known it to be in inches, at least for American women.

How to obtain a birth certificate?

I was born in Salem Ohio and am trying to obtain a copy of my birth certificate. I called the office of vital statistics at the courthouse and they said it would be $21 for the certificate and $24 to mail. I think that this is a little ridiculous. Does anyone no of a less expensive more convenient method?

How to obtain a birth certificate?
go to the County office in person
Reply:$16.50

See: http://www.odh.ohio.gov/vitalstatistics/...
Reply:I have never seen the price that high for a birth certificate and I have ordered numorous ones from different states. Average price that I have had to pay is between $9 and $15 and that includes mailing them to you. The price is more for the time to research it and make a copy and send it to you because if they find no record you still do not get a refund. The type of copy you need also determines the price, a CERTIFIED COPY that will hold up in court will cost you more than just a regular UNCERTIFIED copy. Even if you go in person they usually tell you that you can request it but it will be mailed to you. I also know if a person is alive then you will have to show some kind of ID and resaon that you need it.
Reply:If you go to the office in person, fee is usually a little less, but still won't be free. State website (see below) says fee is $16.50. It might have gone up again, to $21, and they just haven't updated their website.

Often there are offices in each major city, and maybe in middle-sized cities, where you can do this. Ohio website doesn't show this, but you could ask. If you're still living near where you were born, can probably get it locally.
Reply:Don't overnight it, then the mail will be 37 cents
Reply:Nope, that's the rate. Sorry.
Reply:Try going to your local health dept., maybe they could tell you of another way, they keep a copy of all the births. Also go to the County Clerk's office maybe they could also tell you of a way that is not so expensive. I think this is awful what they are wanting to charge you for this. I hope you have good luck in getting your birth record.

Recently got my name changed and now I need to get a passport before March. Will I need a birth certificate?

My name was changed a couple of days ago and I need to go abroad in March. Vital Statistics in my birth town, Washington, are willing to give me a birth certificate if I can get the original name change certificate, which will take too long to get.

Can I just sign up for a passport with my old birth certificate and my name change certificate (copy but stamped with seal)? Any tips or useful information?

Recently got my name changed and now I need to get a passport before March. Will I need a birth certificate?
You can go to your local post office to the passport office there and ASK how to handle this...you need OFFICIAL correct info, so go to the source. You can also go to the web site below, click on "passports", then click on "name change."
Reply:As long as you have changed your name on your government-issued photo ID (ex. driver's license), the passport office will accept it. Make sure you have your photo ID, along with your original birth certificate and your name change certificate.

How do I get a birth certificate from another country?

My mother in law was born in Scotland in 1920. She came to the U.S. in 1921 with her mother and father. My problem is, she never got a birth certificate because she was on her parents naturalization papers, and that was good enough for the U.S. government to be proper identification. Now, however, her naturalization papers no longer work and I need to obtain a legal birth certificate! I have e-mailed vital statistics in Scotland, and they have no record of her, so how am I supposed to get a copy if theres not an original and none of her papers can be used? Is she now considered a Illegal Alien? Does anyone know what I can do? Alls I need is to get her a state I.D. and the U.S. is making that almost impossible. Thanks for any info.!

How do I get a birth certificate from another country?
Yes much has changed with the post 9-11 world.

UK (which Scotland is part of) certificates or even copies of them are not just obtained through paperwork or such. You have to hire a certified researcher to get them. So I can see why the email thing did not work out.

They kept really good records back in the day in the UK. I bet you could easily get her parents certificates or a marriage certificate. But all in all this should not be necessary. She has been in the US since 1921?

Has she owned property here? Had a job? And she has naturalization papers? A judge would easily take care of this. But it is not her status it is just DMV.

If it was my Mom I would take her to a post office and apply for a passport. They will sort this out much faster than a DMV as they have more experience with all of this. She has her or her parents naturalization papers? Even if not they will deal with it.
Reply:No record? That's very odd. I've been able to get birth certificates, death certificates, baptismal certificates and marriage certificates for my family members that came from Lincolnshire (north central England) dating back to the 1790's. The UK even has a free birth/death/marriage registry on-line that has everything dating from the 1830's forward.

Just curious that the government is making it hard for a citizen to get a state ID. She does have her naturalization papers doesn't she? No exception for an 87 year old woman?**
Reply:I dont know, i just know you have to get it translated.
