My boyfriend was born in Jersey City, NJ in the year of1990. I would like to know if it's true that you must go to the office of vital statistics in Trenton, NJ to get a new birth certificate. If yes, I would like to know the cost and what you need to bring.

You may get the letter of authenticity the same day by appearing in-person at the State Bureau of Vital Statistics and Registration office in Trenton or get the letter within 4 to 6 weeks by sending your documents to:

To get a copy of a vital record, you must submit:





A completed application


A copy of the proof(s) of your identity


The correct fee


Proof of your relationship to the person listed on the vital record you are requesting (Only required for certified copies)

Indicate on your application that it will need an Apostille Seal, and you will receive a certified copy of the vital record with the original signature of the State Registrar or Assistant State Registrar. You must forward this document to the New Jersey Department of Treasury, which issues the Apostille Seal.
